Content
History
Charlotte County was formed on April 23, 1921 . It was named for Charlotte Bay. The only incorporated city in the county is Punta Gorda , the county center.
On August 13, 2004, Charlotte County was one of the most affected areas due to the passage of Hurricane Charlie .
Geography
The county is located in the southwestern part of the state. Borders on counties: Sarasota (in the northwest), De Soto (in the north), Highlands (in the far northeast), Glades (in the east), Hendry (in the far southeast) and Lee (in the south). In the west it is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Population
According to the 2000 census, the district's population is 141,627 people. Racial composition: white - 92.58%; African Americans - 4.39%; Asians - 0.85%; Native Americans - 0.22%; Oceanians - 0.03%; other races - 0.79%; representatives of two or more races - 1.14%. English is native to 92.3% of the population; Spanish - for 3%; French - for 1.1%.
Age structure: up to 18 years: 15.7%; from 18 to 24 years: 4.5%; 25 to 44 years old: 18.8% 45 to 64 years old: 26.4% over 64 years old - 34.7% (in Charlotte there is the highest proportion of people over 65 among all the districts of the country). The average age of the population is 54.3 years (one of the highest in the United States). For every 100 females there are 91.4 males.
