Creation History

Initially, the NX PLM system was called Unigraphics. Unigraphics software was developed by United Computing. In 1976 , McDonnell Douglas (acquired by Boeing ) acquired United Computing and was subsequently formed by the McDonnell Douglas Automation Unigraphics Group. EDS acquired this business in 1991 [4] . Following the acquisition of Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) EDS in 2001 [5] , the Unigraphics product was merged with the SDRC-developed I-DEAS system. The gradual addition of I-DEAS functionality to the Unigraphics core code became the foundation of the existing NX product line [6 ] .

NX CAM is a key component of the technological design system, which also includes means of transferring information to production and many other functions.

Solution Overview

A set of tools for programming CNC machines allows you to use NX CAM in a wide variety of industries. NX CAM is implemented and used in the aerospace and defense industries [7] , automotive [8] , engineering [9] , consumer goods [10] , medical equipment [11] and other industries.

NX CAM is supplied both as a separate workstation for processing programming, and as a CAD / CAM system, and may also include a process data management system and tool libraries. NX CAM supports collaboration with NX design applications to form a single solution. NX CAM comes with translators, built-in processing visualization tools, and a postprocessor editor.

The manufacture of products with a complex geometry of external contours requires appropriate software for calculating the control program for the CNC machine . Depending on the complexity of the part, turning is used, milling on machines with three to five controlled axes, turning and milling, wire EDM . The NX CAM system has all the capabilities to create tool paths for the respective types of machining.

NX CAM has a wide range of built-in automation tools - from wizards and templates to programming capabilities for processing typical structural elements.

The CNC program generator includes machining strategies designed to create programs with minimal involvement of the engineer.

The concept of the master model is the basis on which the distribution of data between the design module and other NX modules, including CAM modules, is built . [12]

In order for a program to be run on a particular machine, it is necessary to convert it into machine codes for that machine. This is done using a post processor. In the NX system, there is a special module for setting up the post processor for any control racks and CNC machines . The main settings are performed without programming, however, it is possible to connect special procedures in the Tcl language , which opens up wide possibilities for making any necessary unique changes to the postprocessor.

The verification and simulation functions integrated into NX CAM allow specialists to check the tool path during the programming of CNC machines . A multi-level verification process is available: for example, a simulation of the machine based on the G-code shows the movement controlled by the program generated by the built-in NX post-processor. The 3D model of the machine along with the part, fixtures and tools moves in accordance with the progress of the machine as the G-code is processed [13] .

The NX Tooling Design tooling app allows you to design molds and sequential action dies . The application supports the use of standard components from libraries, as well as numerical modeling functions that allow you to visualize the movement of additional instrumental components.

The NX Mold Design module for mold design allows you to automate the process of designing connector lines and mold surfaces, creating a matrix and punch , as well as a mold block, directly using the part model. Key attributes are added to control automated processing programming in NX CAM.

Designing sequential action dies in the NX CAM system contains detailed information on the creation of dies to automate the design process. It guides the user through a series of steps, including the analysis of formability, the creation of a tape layout, the design of the basis of the stamp and verification of work. The NX CAM system includes an automotive die design module that provides planning, design, and evaluation of the die surface, design, and performance verification.

The NX Electrode Design software module provides a step-by-step solution for automating the EDM process from design to production.

Included in the NX CAM is a tool for autonomous programming of coordinate measuring machines (CMM) CMM Inspection Programming, which allows you to create computer-based programs for monitoring product quality indicators. Checked structural elements and trajectories of the control and measuring sensors are automatically created based on the design and technological information (PMI) contained in the 3D design model. The CMM Inspection Programming application supports simulation of CMM collision processing and control, it is possible to select built-in CMM models from the library, including Renishaw PH20 contact sensors with touch-head technology, and it is possible to create custom CMM models.

NX CAM supports the possibility of programming robotic complexes, which allows the use of robots to perform processing operations such as milling , engraving , polishing , grinding , deburring, drilling , riveting , etc. [14]

Also, NX CAM allows you to create control programs for hybrid machines that support 3D printing by metal deposition [15] [16] .
