Holiday History
The date chosen for the "Ground Forces Day" is not accidental: on October 1, 1550 , the Tsar and Grand Prince of All Russia Ivan Vasilievich issued the Sentence "On the placement in the Moscow and surrounding districts of a chosen thousand service people " , which essentially became a key document in the further formation and the development of the ground forces of the Russian Empire [1] .
On May 31, 2006, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir V. Putin signed Decree No. 549 “On the Establishment of Professional Holidays and Memorable Days in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”, which prescribed the celebration of “Ground Forces Day” on October 1 [2] .
The Ground Forces of the Russian Armed Forces include the following types of troops : Motorized Rifle Forces , Tank Forces , Missile Forces and Artillery , Air Defense Forces of the Ground Forces and the formation of Special Forces and Services. Some of these military branches also have their own highly specialized day, for example: Tanker ’s Day, Missile Force and Artillery Day, Air Defense Day [3] and so on. Nevertheless, the commander-in-chief of the Russian army considered it necessary to create, in addition to them, a “Day of Ground Forces” in order to consolidate the military fraternity between the various arms of the ground forces.
In 2015, the Day of Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Russia was first celebrated on Preobrazhenskaya Square in Moscow. Here in the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, a bishop service was held, which was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Russia, Colonel General O. Salyukov . Before the service began, the order of the Minister of Defense of Russia Sergey Shoigu and the decree of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill were read out, according to which the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord officially became the main temple of the Russian ground forces [4] .
