Childhood and Family

Thomas Newman was born in Los Angeles, California , in the family of a Mississippi- born Martha Louise Montgomery and Hollywood legendary composer Alfred Newman . Thomas Newman is a member of a dynasty of composers specializing in film composition, which includes his father, uncle Lionel Newman , his brother David Newman , and his cousins Joe Newman and Randy Newman , who is better known as a singer and composer, and his sister Maria Newman.

From childhood, the boy showed interest in music, learned to play the piano and violin.

Education and activities

Newman was educated at Yale and began his career as a composer in 1984 with the creation of the music for the movie Fearless . His breakthrough occurred in 1994, when he received two Academy nominations for the music for the films Little Women and The Shawshank Redemption , Newman was the only twice nominee this year. In recent years, he has achieved success (both critically and commercially) by writing music for the films “ American Beauty ” (winner of the “ Grammy ” award for the best soundtrack for a feature film, television or other visual media), “The Cursed Way ” , “ Finding Nemo ”, “ Lemony Snicket: 33 misfortunes ”, “ Erin Brockovich ”, “ Good German ” and “ WALL-E ”.

Newman also writes music for television, including the theme song for the Boston Public series and the Angels in America mini-series. His musical theme for the series “ The Client is Always Dead ” won two Grammy awards in 2003 - Best Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Arrangement.

At the Academy’s 79th award ceremony, in response to the joke of director Errol Morris that he was nominated and could not win an Oscar eight times, he replied: “Yes, I have not been able to receive the award seven times and this will be my eighth time” .

In 2007, director Michael Moore included 7 compositions previously written by Newman in his documentary Sicko.

A fragment of the song "Brooks Was Here", which was written for the film " Shawshank Redemption " and included in its soundtrack, was used in the song Seal "My Vision".

One of the soundtracks for the film “The Green Mile”, written by Thomas, was used to write the composition “The Punishment” from the musical project Movie.

Newman received a total of fourteen nominations for the Academy Award , but until 2017 he never won, making him the most nominated living composer who has never received this award after Alex North (15 nominations). Thirteen nominations were in the category "Best Film Music" and one in the category "Best Song". Also, the composer's assets have three nominations for the Golden Globe , two BAFTA figurines (with five nominations) and six Grammy Awards (11 nominations).
