Content
History
The area was first mentioned in written sources as Warkland ( German: Warkland ) under 1226, when it was subordinated to the Riga archbishop . Under 1483, an urban settlement is already mentioned here. Since 1538, lands were granted to the Borkh family. After the partition of Poland in 1772, the Varaklyans retreated to the Russian Empire , and in 1784 received the status of a township . In 1789, Count Michael Borch built a palace in Varaklyany and with it a park that has survived to this day.
According to the census of 1897, 1810 people lived in Varaklyany, including 364 of the Roman Catholic faith and 1365 of the Jewish faith.
On February 11, 1928, the Varaklyans received city status.
From 1949 to 1956 it was the administrative center of the Varaklyansky district .
