Distribution and Ecology
The range of the species includes tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of Central Asia , Indochina , Japan , America , Africa and Australia .
Grows in rice fields.
Botanical Description
Stems 10-50 cm, triangular in the upper part.
The leaves are linear, flat, smooth, 3-5 mm wide, shorter than the stem.
The inflorescence is a complex umbrella with 4–12 primary rays (4–12 cm long) and 3–8 secondary rays, often giving third-order rays ending in 3–10 spikelets . Spikelets 10-15 mm long and 1-2 mm wide, highly compressed, consist of 10-40 flowers . Covering scales are ovoid, blunt, brownish-light green or reddish-brown, 1-1.5 mm long. Stamens 3 or 2, stigma 3.
The nutlet is indistinct, light brown or yellowish.
