Story
The film takes place in the modern Republic of South Africa , which is experiencing the effects of many years of apartheid . The story focuses on the story of David Lurie ( John Malkovich ), a South African professor of Anglo-Jewish descent. Using his official position, he forces sex to a " colored " student Melanie. After the case is publicized, it is shamefully expelled from the University of Cape Town . He decides to go to his lesbian daughter Lucy, who lives in a remote province. In the neighborhood with her lives with his family African Petrus. At first, David takes him for a servant (he introduces himself as a person who watches his daughter’s dogs), but soon he notes that Petrus sometimes behaves too freely - for example, he can enter his daughter’s house without warning and start watching TV.
A few days after arrival, a daughter was brutally raped by a group of local black guys, and the professor himself was almost killed. However, when he tries to figure out and punish the guilty, he runs into incomprehensible resistance and misunderstanding on the part of his daughter. The role of Petrus in history looks more and more complicated. At the same time, David unsuccessfully tries to find reconciliation with the Melanie family and is experiencing another short love affair.
