History

Formation (2005-2007)

The group was formed in 2005 after Deuce (Aron Erlichman) and J-Dog (Jorel Dekker) posted on MySpace a song called The Kids . After receiving a positive response, they found other members of the group on the Internet. In 2005, the composition of the group was: Shady Jeff (Jeff Matthew Philips), Johnny 3 Tears (George Arthur Reagan), Funny Man (Dylan Peter Alvarez), Charlie Scene (Jordan Christopher Terrell), Da Kurlzz (Matthew Alexis Busek) and The Phantasm (Justin Lafayette Roman). In an interview with Shave J-Dog magazine, he explained: “The one who was in the room at the right time and played the instrument became a member of the group” [5] . Regarding the name “Hollywood Undead”, J-Dog said that the first jointly recorded song was called “Hollywood” (later the name was changed to “ No.5 ”), and the group was planned to be called simply “Undead”. Seeing a disc with a song, a friend of the group said: “Undead Hollywood”, and then, reading the other way around: “Hollywood Undead? Cool name! ” [6] .

Shady Jeff later left Hollywood Undead and opened a network of petrol stations specializing in biofuels [7] . One of the features of the group were masks, with the help of which musicians hide their appearance. As the band grew in popularity, Hollywood Undead turned their attention to the recently created MySpace Records , and their song “ No.5 ” was included in Myspace Records Vol. 1 ; Then the group shot a video for this track. They owe much of their success to MySpace to their mutual friend Jeffrey Star , who by then had already been seriously promoted on this social network and helped them promote the group’s page.

Label Contract, Swan Songs and Desperate Measures (2007—2010)

It took Hollywood Undead a little over a year to record tracks for the album. For about two years they were searching for a label that would not censor their album. Initially, the band signed a contract with MySpace Records, but after the label tried to censor their album, the band broke the contract with him and began looking for another label. As a result, the band signed a contract with A & M / Octone Records and released their debut album Swan Songs on September 2, 2008. The album was produced by Don Gilmore (Don Gilmore) and Danny Lohner (Danny Lohner), known for working with groups such as Linkin Park and Nine Inch Nails . A month before the release of the album, the group gives its first live performance at the Virgin Mobile Festival with songs such as " Undead ", " Black Dahlia ", "California".

Swan Songs debuted at number 22 on the Billboard 200 with 21,000 copies sold in its first week. [8] At the end of 2009, the group won the Rock on Request Awards in the category “Best Crank / Rap Rock Band” [9] .

Conflict with Deuce

In 2009, the vocalist and founder of Deuce unexpectedly did not take part in the Vatos Locos Tour. Charlie Scene said in an interview: “He wanted a personal assistant” (Deuce's friend, Jimmy Hume, who helped create masks and also recorded This Love, This Hate with Deuce) during the tour. None of us had a personal assistant, we are not egomaniac. We don’t need this, but he wanted the band to pay for it for four months ... We went to the airport to fly to the next performance. He did not appear. We called him, but he did not pick up the phone. And for two weeks I had to sing in his place ” [10] .

Then the group invited their old friend Daniel Murillo to play Deuce vocal roles during the tour [11] . Daniel agreed, interrupting the career of a vocalist in the post-hardcore band Lorene Drive and a performance in the famous American Idol show . In mid-January 2010, the group officially announced it as a new member, giving the pseudonym Danny . In the spring of 2010, Deuce recorded the song “Story of a Snitch”, in which he claims to have been kicked out of the band. In response, Hollywood Undead said they would not succumb to these provocations, so as not to "fall to its level." After leaving Hollywood, Undead Deuce began a solo career.

Charlie Scene said the group will begin recording demos of songs during the Buried Alive tour and will begin recording final versions of tracks immediately after the tour ends, in December 2011. He also stated that the album would sound more like Swan Songs than American Tragedy . Commenting on the difference in sound this time, he said: “I would say that this time the label gave us complete freedom in terms of creativity. I think it will be more like Swan Songs than American Tragedy . It will be a mixture of both, I mean, we all grow up as musicians, we grow up, and we make music for quite some time, so I think it will be more like Swan Songs, and I think that our fans will like it a lot. ” [27] Later in an interview with Charlie Scene, he said that the group was not going to delay the release of the album and plans to release it in late summer [28] . Musical style and distribution of vocal roles

Music Hollywood Undead is a wide variety of musical styles, mostly a mix of hip hop with alternative rock and alternative metal. However, many attribute them to rap rock , crankcore or nu metal .

Half of the songs in Swan Songs displayed a mixed style, while the other half showed a heavier sound. Many critics said they were confused due to the constant change in the sound of music [33] . American Tragedy was recorded in the same style, but with a large number of classic rock instruments, as well as synthesizers and electronic elements, and most of the tracks can be attributed to rap rock rather than hip-hop .

Most Hollywood Undead songs are serious and pessimistic (“Day of the Dead”, “Paradise Lost”, “ City ”, “SCAVA”, “Lion”, “Save Me”, “Coming Back Down”, “Does Everybody In The World Have To Die ”,“ Let Go ”), but there are also dancing ones suitable for performance in clubs (“ No.5 ”,“ Comin 'in Hot ”,“ One More Bottle ”,“ Delish ”,“ War Child ”,“ Lights Out ”,“ Usual Suspects ”)

The group said in an interview that each member of the group plays its own role in the song, writing and performing its passage in the compositions [34] .

Most songs are structured as follows: 2, 3 (rarely 4) rap verses, a chorus performed by pure vocals, and a bridge, usually a mixture of both. There are also songs without the use of rap verses (“Take Me Home”) and without clean vocals (“Does Everybody In The World Have To Die”).

Until 2009, pure vocals were sung by Deuce . With the release of American Tragedy, Danny took on his role. Da Kurlzz usually does not have a passage in the song, acting as a scream vocalist . Johnny 3 Tears and J-Dog usually perform couplets in serious songs, and Charlie Scene and Funny Man in fun club songs. There are songs, all couplets in which one member of the group performs: “No Other Place”, “Delish”, “Cashed Out” ( Funny Man ), “Young”, “SCAVA”, “Pour Me”, “Lion”, “Outside ”,“ The Diary ”,“ Paradise Lost ”,“ Ghost ”,“ Does Everybody In The World Have To Die ”,“ Pray (Put Em In the Dirt) ”,“ Something To Believe ”( Johnny 3 Tears ),“ This Love, This Hate ”( Deuce ),“ Everywhere I Go ”,“ Kill Everyone ”( Charlie Scene ),“ From The Ground ”,“ Nobody's Watching ”( J-Dog ),“ Ghost Beach ”( Danny ). In only six songs, six members of the group take part at once: “ Christmas in Hollywood ”, “The Natives”, “Lump Your Head”, “How We Roll”, “Gravity”, “Scene For Dummies”. A former seventh member, Shady Jeff , takes part in Scene for Dummies, reading the third verse. The songs California Reming, We Own the Night, Your Life, Bang Bang, and Riot, recorded after Da Kurlzz 's departure, featured all five of the remaining members.

Masks

At all concerts, members of the group wear masks, putting them on during photo shoots and some interviews. Participants themselves develop the style of their masks.

The first masks appeared at the very beginning of the creative path of Hollywood Undead and were quite primitive. They can be found in a few photos of the group of that period. They also appear in the first video for the song “No.5” (2006).

The first changes to the mask took place before the release of the album Swan Songs . They have become more complex and thoughtful. Each mask has another version - vocal, with a cutout for the mouth. At live performances, the group began to remove masks after the first few songs.

The following changes occurred in 2010, after the departure of Deuce and before the release of the album American Tragedy . Luminous elements appeared on the masks of Da Kurlzz , Johnny 3 Tears and J-Dog.

In one of his interviews, Charlie Scene said that the group will change masks with the release of each new album [35] .
