Biography
Roger Bonwen graduated from the Swiss Higher Technical School in Zurich in 1932 with a diploma in civil engineering. Then he participated in the construction of the Grand Dixens Dam (1932–34), worked at the National Topographic Bureau (1935–36), in the public works department of the canton of Valle (1936–42). From 1942 to 1949 he dealt with labor protection issues in the cantonal department of the interior. From 1949 to 1955, he directed the construction of the Mauvoisin Dam. In 1955 he was elected mayor of Sion and a member of the National Council. He held these positions until 1962 , when he became a member of the Federal Council (Government) of Switzerland.

Bonwen played a decisive role in the construction of the Fourka main tunnel. It was discovered 20 days after his death.
