Record History

After participating in the 48-hour charity show Radiothon ( Radio [ mara ] von ), held at the KLOS radio station, Jimmy Bane and Vivian Campbell noted that heavy music, especially popular in the mid -1980s, was not presented on the international charity scene. In the wake of the success of the charity recordings of the mega-bands Band Aid (" Do They Know It's Christmas? ") And USA for Africa (" We Are the World "), a similar heavy metal project could not go unnoticed. Bane and Campbell proposed the idea to Ronnie James Dio , who also participated in the Radio Marathon, and they decided on the project.

From an interview with Ronnie James Dio (about the words of Jimmy Bane and Vivian Campbell):

“Let's find people who play the same way we do and offer them participation in the project. All proceeds from the Stars will go to the hunger strike campaign. If it works, then it will be great. And let's hope that the jungle does not grow behind us on the path that we pave. ”

Three musicians together wrote a song “Stars” specially for the project, designed for several tens of leading representatives of the heavy stage.

In May 1985, 40 musicians arrived in Hollywood , where from May 20 to 21, the song “Stars” was recorded. In addition, some of the musicians and groups presented their previously made recordings for the project.

A single was released shortly after the recording of “Stars” (the 12 ”single also contained interviews of the project participants), but a full-scale release, in connection with disputes between various record companies that had the rights to musicians' compositions, took place only on January 1, 1986. Subsequently, the album was reissued on CD .

In the framework of the project, in addition to the actual audio recordings, videos, various accessories and clothes with the project logo were released. During the year, the project raised about 1 million US dollars.
