There are nine higher education institutions in Israel that conduct research and assign higher academic degrees [1] .
In addition to universities , in Israel there are about 50 academic colleges that assign academic degrees, but do not conduct research. Universities operate under the supervision of the Higher Education Council ( Heb. מועצה להשכלה גבוהה ). In 2006, 153 thousand students studied at Israeli universities. The most popular specialties were medicine and law .

In 2005, the Israeli government decided to open a university in Galilee and give university status to a college in Ariel (as a result, the college changed its name to the "university center", and it received full university status only in December 2012). In the same year, Bar-Ilan University began the creation of a medical school in Safed .

As of 2003, 29 percent of Israelis 25-64 years old had some kind of academic degree (including college degrees). This indicator is the second in the world (after Norway ) and corresponds to the level of the United States .
Organizations of students and university workers
The university senior staff is united in the " Senior Staff Coordinating Council " ( Hebrew מועצה המתאמת של הסגל האקדמי הבכיר ), and the youngest one is in the " Junior Staff Organization Coordinating Forum " ( Hebrew פורום המתאם שלקדונווסג ) Student organizations are united in the " Student Union in Israel " ( Hebrew התאחדות הסטודנטים בישראל ).
