On February 17 , 1897, an English punitive expedition under the command of Admiral Harry Rawson captured and burned the city, destroying most of the treasures of the kingdom of Benin. The surviving valuables ( Benin bronze , portrait figures, busts and groups made of iron, carved ivory, brass (tentatively called "bronze") were taken out by the British and are currently on display in many museums around the world.

In 1967, the city for one day became the capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Benin .
