Biography
He studied law at the University of Munich . From 1912 to 1918, he served as Minister of Education in the Government of the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1920 to 1922 he was a member of the Bavarian parliament from the BNP party. In 1922 he was elected Prime Minister of Bavaria.
In September 1923 , at the height of the political and economic crisis caused by the consequences of the Ruhr conflict , Knilling declared a state of emergency and appointed Bavaria's general commissioner Gustav von Kara , giving him almost dictatorial powers. Further events resulted in the Beer Coup , during which Eugen von Knilling and members of his government [2] were taken into custody by Rudolf Hess attack aircraft.
In May 1924 , having lost the elections to the Landtag, he retired and resigned from politics.
