Biography
Patricia Claire Bloom was born on February 15, 1931 in one of the northern regions of London . Her ancestors, both on the mother’s side (Gravitsky) and on her father’s side (Blumenthal), were Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire (grandfather came from the town of Byten, Slonim district of the Grodno province [1] ; maternal grandmother Polina, daughter of the chief rabbi of Frankfurt , came to England from Riga around 1900).
Both parents Claire were born in England, her father in Liverpool and her mother in Cricklewood in London.
After studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Theater , as well as at the Central School of Drama, Bloom made her debut on BBC radio programs . In 1946, she first appeared on the stage, and a year later she already played with Richard Burton and John Gilgud in the successful play “Lady Not for Burning”. A year later, she received good reviews for playing the role of Ophelia in Hamlet . In the subsequent years of her theatrical career, Claire Bloom appeared in many famous plays, both in London and in New York .
Her film debut took place in 1948, but she achieved success and popularity on the movie screens only in 1952, when she starred in the lead role with Charlie Chaplin in his film “ Ramp Lights ”. This role brought the actress the BAFTA Award in the nomination Most Promising Newcomer. After that, she appeared in several other famous costume films, including “Richard the Third” (1955), “ Alexander the Great ” (1956), “The Brothers Karamazov” (1958), “Filibuster” (1958) and “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” (1962).
In the 1960s, Claire Bloom switched to modern roles, playing in the films Chapman's Report (1962), Spy Coming from the Cold (1965), Charlie (1968) and Doll's House (1973). In 1989, she co-starred with Woody Allen in Crimes and Misconduct , and a few years before she reappeared in the epic film Clash of the Titans . Claire Bloom also starred in Hollywood , where she played her most famous role in the film Daylight (1996) with Sylvester Stallone in the title role.
On television, Bloom was remembered for her roles in the films “Kingdom of Shadows” (1985), for her role in which she won the second BAFTA prize, and “ Anastasia: Anna's Riddle ” (1986), as well as in the series “ How the World Rotates ” and “ Doctor Who ”, in which she is currently filming [2] .
The actress was married three times, and her every marriage ended in a divorce. From her first husband, actor Rod Steiger , she gave birth to a daughter, Anna Steiger, who became an opera singer. With her last husband, writer Philip Roth , she divorced in 1995. Despite the many romantic relationships, the greatest love of his life calls Richard Burton , whom she met at the age of 18 on the stage. At 22, they developed a stormy romance, which did not result in anything more due to the fact that the actor was married [3] .
