Biography

Theodore was a Greek by birth, he was born in Jerusalem and was the son of the Bishop of Jerusalem. He received the rank of deacon about 640 years , and the cardinal - under Pope John IV [1] .

Theodore was elevated to the popes by the decision of Exarch Ravenna Isaac on November 24, 642 . The pope continued to fight the heresy of the Monothelites , corresponded with the Byzantine emperor. He refused to recognize Paul II as the Patriarch of Constantinople , since his predecessor Pierre was elected in violation of the procedure. He put pressure on the emperor Constant II , demanding to cancel the "Ecthesis" of the emperor Heraclius . Although his efforts did not make a big impression on Constantinople , he strengthened the opposition of heresy in the West. Pierre even gave up his views for a short time ( 645 year ), but was still excommunicated from the church in 648 . Paul was excommunicated in 649 . In response, Paul destroyed the Roman altar in the mausoleum of Galla Placidia and exiled or imprisoned papal nuncios.

Theodore planned the Lateran Council of 649, which condemned Ecthesis, but died before it could be convened. This was done by his successor, Pope Martin I. Theodore was buried in St. Peter's Basilica. His holiday is celebrated on May 18th .
