Biography

Born on July 8, 1934 in the village of Urshel, Vladimir Region, in a military family. In 1963 he graduated from Kazan Aviation Institute .

He was a friend of Yuri Vlasov .

Senior trainer of the Tatsovet DSO "Petrel" ( 1958 - 1968 ), coach of the Kazan school of higher sportsmanship ( 1968 - 1971 ), engineer of a research institute for the introduction of computer technology ( 1971 - 1973 ).

As a student at the institute, under the guidance of coach Vladimir Pavlov, he seriously engaged in weightlifting and in 1956 he fulfilled the standard of the USSR master of sports.

In 1959 , 1960 and 1962, Alexander Kurynov was the winner of the Friendship Cup international competitions.

He achieved the greatest success in 1960 , winning the title of champion of the Olympic Games in Rome , defeating the β€œiron” Tommy Cono ( USA ) and setting world records in the clean and jerk - 170.5 kg and in the event of triathlon - 437.5 kg. For this success, he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.

He also performed successfully after the Olympic Games. Kurynov - world champion 1961 , 1962 , 1963 and European champion 1960 - 1963 . On the account of Alexander Kurynov - 14 world records.

He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor ( 1960 ). Member of the CPSU since 1967.

To perpetuate the memory of an outstanding athlete by the decision of the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan in 1990, a memorial plaque was installed on the building of the Kazan Aviation Institute (Freedom Square).

Every year in memory of him, international weightlifting competitions are held.

In 2012, after restoration, the monument to the athlete was re-opened, located in the cemetery in Kazan [1] .
