Biography

Born November 25, 1955 in Minsk , came from a working-class family . Belarusian In 1972, he graduated from Minsk specialized secondary school ( English ) No. 87, after which he worked there as a laboratory assistant in a physics classroom for two years. At the same time he studied at the evening department of the Mathematics Faculty of the Belarusian State University (BSU). He served in the Baltic Fleet in the marines (1974-1976). After demobilization, he worked in the forging shop of the Minsk Tractor Plant .

In 1976-1983 - a student of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, BSU. He graduated from university with a red diploma. Actively participated in the student movement, five times traveled the commander of the construction teams. In 1983-1986 - Secretary of the Komsomol Committee of the BSU.

In 1986-1988 he worked at BSU as a teacher, senior teacher, associate professor, dean of the faculty. Actively engaged in scientific, educational and social activities. He defended his thesis on the problems of the analytical theory of differential equations.

From 1988 to 1996, he worked in the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus: first, he was Head of the Analytical and Prospective Development Department, Head of the Leading Directorate of Perspective Development and Continuing Education, then Deputy Minister, First Deputy Minister. He made a significant contribution to the formation of the education system of an independent Belarusian state, was the initiator of its reform and transfer to the innovative development path. One of the authors of the law "On Education" of the Republic of Belarus. At the same time, he did not interrupt scientific work, he defended his doctoral dissertation on new educational technologies.

In 1996 he was appointed rector of the Belarusian State University [1] . In 2000 he was elected to the same position by an absolute majority of the United Council of BSU.

From 1998 to 2001 - Member of the Government of the Republic of Belarus, Minister. He was chairman of the Council of Rectors of Universities of Belarus, a member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus [2] [3] .

Widowed, has two daughters (Olga and Julia). On February 23, 2008, at the 49th year of life, his wife, Irina, died of a serious long-term illness [2] .

He is fond of tennis , volleyball and chess .

He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers.

Political activities

On April 10, 2005, he was elected at the unification congress the chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Gromada). In 2005, he became the founder and coordinator of the Civic Initiative for the creation of the National Movement “People’s Will”, the organizational structures of which were planned to be created in the cities and regional centers of Belarus, but the initiative did not continue.

In December 2005, Kozulin was registered as a presidential candidate of Belarus . At the elections, according to official data, he gained 2.3% of the vote, according to independent opinion polls - several times more. On March 25, 2006, he was arrested, and then on July 13 of the same year, he was sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment "for malicious hooliganism and organizing mass riots". Since October 20, 2006, he has been on a hunger strike to protest, demanding that the situation in Belarus be reviewed by the UN Security Council [4] . According to his relatives, during the eight months of imprisonment, during the hunger strike, Aleksandr Kozulin lost 40 kg.

On December 13, 2006, US Representative William Brensik raised the issue of the human rights situation in Belarus during a closed meeting in the UN Security Council . According to Anatoly Levkovich, the Gramada deputy chairman, this initiative demonstrated recognition of Kozulin as an opposition leader. On the same day, the US Senate supported the bill, in which he called on the US President to impose additional sanctions against Belarus.

In December 2006, the human rights organization Amnesty International recognized Alyaksandr Kazulin as a prisoner of conscience [5] .

In August 2008, together with Andrei Kim and Sergei Parsyukevich, he was pardoned by a special decree of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko .

Another opposition candidate in the 2006 presidential election, Alexander Milinkevich, in an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio about Kozulin and his march to the distribution center [6] :

“I told him [Kozulin] when we were standing on the podium that in no case should we do this ... I condemn the provocateurs who led people to prison ..." Taking the Bastille "is now no longer necessary ... These provocations are unforgivable, this is a crime from people who call themselves opposition. "

On August 3, 2008, the leader of the BSDP (Gromada) party was re-elected. Instead of Alexander Kozulin, the former deputy Anatoly Levkovich was elected the leader of the party. December 21, 2008, Alexander Kozulin left the party [2] .

In the fall of 2009, Kozulin’s official website stopped working due to a hacker attack [7] .

In 2015, he rejected all proposals to resume his political activities after becoming a candidate in the 2015 Presidential election , or to join the team of any of the opposition candidates. He called on opposition leaders to “boycott elections that are not there” [8] [9] .

Currently, the ex-presidential candidate does not conduct any political activities.
