Grandmaster of the USSR by correspondence - in the USSR the highest sports rank for chess players who played by correspondence. It was established by the State Sports Committee of the USSR in 1982 in connection with the allocation in the Unified All-Union Sports Classification of a special section "Absentee Chess Competitions".
First assigned on January 1, 1988.
Assignment Criteria
The title was awarded for outstanding achievements in the game by correspondence:
- 1st place in the personal world championship;
- 1st place (twice) in the USSR personal championship with the participation of at least 8 grandmasters and masters
- For those with the title of International Grandmaster or Grand Master of the ICChF - to fulfill this requirement 1 time.
In the Russian Federation, the same highest sports rank is the “Grand Master of Russia in the correspondence game of chess” [1] .
