Biography

Lothar Schmid was born in May 1928 in Weimar Germany. At the age of 13, he became interested in chess and became a member of a chess club in his city. After 2 years, he is already a chess master in his land. In 1947, he took part and won the chess championship in the Soviet demilitarization zone.

In 1948, the athlete managed to move to Bavaria. The rest of his life he lived in this land. He played for the national team of Germany, in 1959 received the title of grandmaster, in 1975 received the title of international arbiter.

He died at the age of 86 on May 18, 2013 in Bavaria . [one]

Participation in competitions

2nd prize winner of the championships of Germany ( 1955 and 1959). Winner of international tournaments: Travemünde (1951), Zurich ( 1954 and 1964 ), Gothenburg ( 1956 ), Malaga ( 1963 ; 1-2 place), Mar del Plata ( 1970 , 1973 ), London ( 1979 ).

Other successful performances: Hastings (1951/1952) - 3rd; Venice ( 1953 ); - 2-3rd; Zurich ( 1961 ) - 4-5th; Bamberg ( 1968 ) - 2-3rd (with T. Petrosyan ); Adelaide ( 1971 ) - 2-4 places.

Participant of the FIDE zonal tournament in Dublin ( 1957 ) - the 4th place and the USSR-Germany match ( 1960 ). In 1950 - 1974 (except for 1966 and 1972 ) he played for the German team at the Olympiads (1974 - 1st board). In the game of correspondence, took 1st place in the international tournament in memory of E. Dikgof (1954-1956); 2-3rd - in the 2nd World Championships (1956-1959).

Judicial and creative activities

The main arbiter of the world championship among men (R. Fisher - B. Spassky, 1972; A. Karpov - V. Korchnoi, 1978 ), challenger matches (R. Fisher - T. Petrosyan, 1971; V. Korchnoi - L. Polugaevsky , 1977 ), the 24th Olympiad ( 1980 ), the Junior World Championships (1980) and other competitions.

A chess player of active positional style, Schmid did not avoid complications. The Schmid party - X. Diez del Corral (Lucerne, 1963) is characteristic of his chess creation: [1] .

The owner of the world's largest private chess library (over 15 thousand books), which also includes incunabula (including the book by L. Lucena ). Author of several studies on the history of chess.
