Shady plants , sciophytes (fromGreek σκιά - shadow + φυτόν - plant), heliophobes (from Greek ἥλιος - the sun + φόβος - fear, fear) - plants that live exclusively in darkened conditions, preferring diffused light. In direct sunlight, shade-loving plants show signs of developmental inhibition and possible sunburn. A group that is opposite in its qualities to photophilous plants .
The most characteristic representatives are algae that live in the water column, forest mosses , lichens , thrills , ferns .
