Life

St. Arey ( 1) , was born in Chalon-on-Son in the middle of the VI century in a noble Gallo-Roman family. The eldest son of his parents, Aprocasius and Sempronia, Saint Arey served for two years at the altar of the local church of St. Vincent. He was ordained priest by Siagrius , Bishop of Grenoble , and for fourteen years served first at Martre -sur-Morge , Puy-de-Dome, or at Morges-en-Trive (Morges-en -Trièves), aka Trièves , then in the Gap.

In 579, Ares became the fourth bishop of the city of Gap after Sagittaire . Here he founded a school in which classical subjects were taught. He participated in 584/585 in II Cathedral in Valence and in 585 in II Macon Cathedral . In 598, together with the archdeacon Balthonius Ares, he visited Rome, where he communicated with Pope Gregory the Great . In recognition of his efforts to transform the Church, he was given a dalmatian . In 599 and 601, the bishop corresponded with the pope on the eradication of simony .

Bishop of Gap Ares learned from St. Columban the calculation of Easter . He organized parish life in his diocese, where one of the villages bears his name. Saint Arey was very revered by his flock.

The legend of the bear Areya

One of the versions of the legend about the bear Areya (panel of the association `` White Bridge ( Le pont blanc ) on the road from Mans (Manse) to Serre Richard (Serre-Richard) in Champsur ( fr: Champsaur )

The name of St. Areus is associated with many traditions. One of them says that when he returned from Rome in 605, Ares went to the summit of Montgenèvre ( col du Montgenèvre ), where in the forest his crew encountered a bear that lifted one of the bulls drawn into it. Ares then ordered the bear to harness himself to the cart instead of the dead bull. The bear humbly did this and Saint Ares arrived in Gap in a carriage that surprised him. Being grateful to the animal for the fact that it did not cause him trouble, Ares released the bear. He retired to the nearest forest and left it only on the day of the death of the saint.

This tradition has various options. In some it is reported that the events took place on the slopes of Montgenèvre, in others - near the Orcières ( fr: Orcières ), in the third - on the top of la Cayolle ( col de la Cayolle ). As for the bear forest, it is located for some in Boscodon ( Boscodon , where a huge skeleton of a bear was found in 1150), for others in Champsaur , on the slopes of the peak of Mans ( col de Manse ).
