The Nobel Prize for Literature is first awarded to an American writer - Sinclair Lewis - "for the powerful and expressive art of storytelling and for the rare ability to create new types and characters with satire and humor." Following the presentation of the prize, Lewis delivers a harsh revelatory speech entitled " Fear of Americans before Literature ."
