Stepnoye is an urban-type settlement in the Saratov region of Russia . The administrative center of the Soviet district . It forms the eponymous Stepnovsky municipality with the status of an urban settlement as the only settlement in its composition [2] .

Title
The original name is Lui ( German: Louis ), also Louis. By decree of February 26, 1768 on the names of the German colonies received the official name Otrogovka . It was also known as Mechetnoe [3] .
Physico-geographical characteristics
The urban-type settlement is located in the Low Trans-Volga region , within the Syrt Plain , belonging to the East European Plain, on the left bank of the Bolshoy Karaman River , opposite the mouth of the Mechetka River. In the vicinity of the village there are ponds [4] . The height of the center of the village is 70 meters above sea level [5] . Dark chestnut soils are widespread in the vicinity of the village. The parent rocks are clay and loam [6] .
By road, the distance to the city of Engels is 71 km, to the regional center of the city of Saratov - 83 km [7] .
- Climate
The climate is temperate continental (according to the Köppen-Dfa climate classification). The long-term rainfall is 452 mm. Precipitation is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year: the largest amount of precipitation falls in November - 46 mm, the smallest in March and April - 26 mm each. The average annual temperature is positive and amounts to + 6.5 ° С, the average temperature of the coldest month of January is −10.4 ° С, the hottest month of July +22.8 ° С [8] .
History
It was founded on June 14, 1767. Calling colony of Leroy and Petit. J. Ditz (History of the Volga German colonists) indicates the year 1766 of the foundation of the colony. According to Klaus (Our colonies), the colony was settled between 1764–66 [3] . Founders - 50 families from Trier and Lorraine . Until 1917 - the German colony of the Tonkoshurovsky colonial district, and after 1871, first the Tonkoshurovsky and then Otrogovskaya volosts of the Novouzensk district of the Samara province .
In 1774 and 1785, the colony was subjected to raids by the Kyrgyz-Kaisaks [9] .
The village first belonged to the Catholic parish Marienthal, and since 1883 - Lui. In 1882, instead of a wooden church, a stone church was built in the village. In addition, in the village there was a chapel of St. Anthony of Padua [3] .
According to the Samara Provincial Statistics Committee, in 1910 in the village of Otrogovka (Lui) there were 619 households with 2382 males and 2474 women, with a total of 4856 souls of both sexes settled by proprietors, Germans, and Catholics. The number of allotment land convenient is shown at 10,639 acres, uncomfortable - 2666 acres. The village had a Catholic church, 2 schools - a parish and a parish, and 8 windmills [3] .
In the Soviet period - the German village of the first Antonovsky (Tonkoshurovsky) district of the Marxstadt district of the Labor commune (Region) of the Volga Germans , and since 1922 - the Tonkoshurovsky (renamed Marientalsky in 1927) canton of the Volga Germans Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ; the administrative center of the Luysky village council (in 1926 the village council included: the village of Lui, the Forest gatehouse) [3] .
In connection with the famine that swept the Volga region in 1921-22, there was a sharp decrease in the population in the region. In 1921, 168 people were born in the village, 453 died. In 1926, there was a cooperative shop, an agricultural credit partnership, an elementary school, and a reading room in the village [9] . In 1927, officially renamed the village of Louis [10] .
On August 28, 1941, a Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces on the resettlement of Germans living in the Volga region was issued. The German population was deported , the village, as well as other settlements of the Mariental canton, was included in the Saratov region, later it was again renamed Otrogovo . In early August 1941, families of officers of the Belarusian military district and ordinary refugees began to arrive in the village. The Kharkov Chervoni Zori collective farm was evacuated here, and a military unit was located in the closed church building (subsequently destroyed).
On July 26, 1950, drilling of the first oil well began; four years later, gas was first produced. The construction of industrial facilities began on this territory. A construction trust was created, which allowed to double the volume of construction. In 1957, more than 5,000 square meters of housing were built and commissioned. By January 1, 1958, 3,050 people lived in the village, of which 81% were workers and employees. 75% of workers and employees were employed in the gas and oil industry. The operation of the industrial facility was ensured by the construction of cultural institutions: a club, a bathhouse, and a laundry [11] . On January 18, 1958, the village of Otrogovo was transformed into the working village of Stepnoe [12] .
Since 1967, the village has been the center of the Soviet district of the Saratov region.

In 1931, Germans made up over 98% of the village population [9] .
Economics
The main sector of the economy of the village is oil and gas production. Here are located a branch of OAO Saratovneftegaz and Stepnovskoye UGG of Gazprom UGS LLC PJSC Gazprom.
Culture
The village has a lyceum, two secondary schools, a children's art school, a youth creativity house, a sports school, and a culture house.
Attractions
In the center of the village is a horseshoe-shaped pond .
September 1, 2011 the park named after Luzyanin was opened.
In the center of the village there is a park equipped with playgrounds, where locals like to spend weekends. The monument to lovers is located near the RDK. Monument to Dimitrov, Lenin. In the park, the walls of memory were erected for those killed in the Second World War. Recently, the “Best Youth” stand was erected, on which photographs of children who have achieved success in various fields are hanging.
