After the discovery of the State Security archives in 2007, it became known that Ahmed Dogan had been an agent of the intelligence services of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria since August 1974 [1] .

Political activities

Dogan was elected to the deputies of all people's assemblies (NA) of Bulgaria since 1990: the 7th great NA (1990-1991, which adopted the new constitution) and all ordinary NAs - from the 36th (1991) to the 41st (2009) .

As the irremovable leader of the party of the largest ethnic minority in Bulgaria - the Turkish, Dogan made an important contribution to the establishment of ethnic peace in the country after the aggravation of the political situation in 1989 due to the “reviving process” among the local Turks. Against the background of inter-ethnic conflicts in the Western Balkans, Bulgaria has long been called the "example of ethnic peace."

Under his leadership, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, based on its loyal electorate, managed to win a stable place in the political center of the country. The DPS mandate formed several governments: expert professors Lyuben Berov (1992-1994) and the coalition Sergei Stanishev with his party BSP and with VATV (2005-2009). The party also took part in the coalition government of Simeon of Sax-coburg-Goth with his party of the CIAA (2001–2005).

On January 19, 2013, while he was reading the report at the 8th National DPS Conference, which also announced his resignation from the post of party chairman, Dogan was assassinated by 25-year-old Oktay Enimekhmedov. The shot did not work, as the gas pistol misfired . The resignation was accepted, he was elected honorary chairman of the DPS. Enimehmedov was later sentenced to 3.5 years in prison because the gun was gas and could not do serious harm to Dogan .
