Hic sunt dracones

Hic sunt dracones is a Latin phrase meaning " dragons live here " and printed on a part of the Lenox globe depicting East Asia . The globe dates back to the first years of the 16th century, but the phrase is much older.

It represents a reinterpretation of the classic Latin expression Hic sunt leones (β€œhere [are found] lions”), which on medieval maps signed unknown lands on the edge of the ecumene . In addition, in the Middle Ages, many maps directly depicted fantastic animals, including dragons. There is a version that the mention of dragons can be associated with the monitors of Komodo on the Indonesian islands, stories about which were fairly common throughout East Asia [1] .

The phrase about dragons was circulated in western literature as a designation for an unknown territory, terra incognita . She appears in the book The Name of the Rose as Hic sunt leones , The Lost TV series, The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End , the Fargo TV series, and the Heavenly Knights animated series, as well as in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt .
