Biography

Hans-Peter Miracle studied law in Basel and Paris and in 1936 received a doctorate in law. From 1952 to 1959 he was a professor at the University of Basel.

In 1936, Miracles became deputy head of the cantonal employment office and in 1938 he headed the city Basel inspection of arts and crafts. From 1944 to 1953 he was elected to the Grand Council (cantonal parliament) of Basel, then until 1959 he was a member of the Cantonal Council (government) of Basel-Stadt and served as head of the department of internal affairs. In 1956 he was also elected to the Council of Cantons (upper house of parliament) of Switzerland. In December 1959, became a member of the Federal Council and Minister of the Interior of Switzerland.

  • January 1, 1960 - December 31, 1973 - Head of the Department (Minister) of the Interior.
  • 1964 , 1969 - Vice President of Switzerland.
  • 1965 , 1970 - President of Switzerland.

After his retirement, Hans-Peter Miracle was a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross and for a quarter of a century led the Swiss Seniors' Pro Senectute Foundation.
