Letov, Sergey Fedorovich

He studied at the Physics and Mathematics Boarding School at NSU in the Academic City of Novosibirsk . He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology , postgraduate study at the All-Union Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM), Variety and Wind Department of the Tambov Cultural Enlightenment School.

He worked on heat-resistant coatings of the Soviet shuttle " Buran " ^[1] . Self-taught began to play the saxophone , flute , bass clarinet . Since 1975, lives in Moscow .

The first public performance was in April 1982, with the ensemble of percussion instruments by Mark Pekarsky (solo on baritone saxophone).

Sergei had numerous disagreements with his younger brother Igor (better known as Yegor Letov): “Our main difference with my brother was that I never aspired to widespread popularity. The number of people at concerts and the number of fans have never been important to me. For me, loyalty to my beliefs and interests was the right way. Igor and I argued a lot about this. He was annoyed by my, so to speak, elitism - that is, addressing a few. And annoying very much. In this he felt a constant encroachment on his own inner truth. When Igor was a young man, he felt a lot of pressure on my part, and many of my friends justly condemned me for this. It’s as if I am putting too much pressure on him, trying to instill in him my views on life, and he supposedly has his own path, the right one. The result of these disagreements was his departure from Moscow to Omsk and the termination of our joint music classes in the 1980s. In fact, the idea of ​​his radicalism is not very justified. Igor is characterized by a methodical building of his circle of fans, a certain “marketing", if such a word can be used. The brother used clear strategies, and he acted quite tough in this regard. He thought a lot about it and behaved absolutely accurately. Partly on this is based on his success ” ^[2] .

In 1982-1993, he worked with Sergei Kuryokhin as a duet, and in Kuryokhin's project Pop Mechanics . Joint performances took place in the USSR and Europe , filming in the films “ Dialogues ” and “ Tragedy in the Style of Rock ”, appearing on television in the program Music Ring .

Since 1984 Sergey Letov has been playing and recording with rock groups - Aquarium , Center , House of Culture , Alice , DDT , Doctor , Funny Pictures , Night Avenue , Atonal Syndrome , Earth and Sky , Soft Animals and Ivan Sokolovsky , Umka and Bronevichok , Overdrive, Rada and Ternovnik , Moscow time, Egor Letov and Civil Defense , Oleg Garkusha and Mikhail Kolovsky, Fedor Chistyakov .

In 1985, Sergey Letov founded the Three O wind ensemble, in which Arkady Shilkloper (French horn), Arkady Kirichenko (tuba, euphonium, bass pipe, vocals), Alexander Alexandrov (bassoon), Yuri Parfenov (trumpet, alt horn). Three "O" performed at almost all jazz festivals of the USSR , as well as in Europe and the USA .

Since 1986, he collaborated with singer Valentina Ponomaryova . The duet gave concerts, starred in films.

Collaborated with the German Cultural Center. Goethe ( Goethe Institute ). As part of this collaboration, he performed at exhibitions of German photography and made musical programs dedicated to the inventors of the cinema, the brothers Skladanovsky and Franz Kafke, and also, together with Alexei Borisov, wrote music for the silent film Friedrich Murnau 's Faust (1926).

Since 1998 he has been releasing CD-R at his own Pentagram publishing house. Some albums published in this way were later reissued as CDs ( KHOR Records Publishing House, Exit Branch ).

In December 1999, he participated in the Grace Young project “The End of Illusion” in Cologne - the last jazz broadcast of the millennium on West-Deutsche Rundfunk radio. He participated with Three O's, pianist Mel Waldron , vocalist Gene Lee, Roman Bunka, Blix Bargeld ( Einstürzende Neubauten ) and others.

In 2003, he began to cooperate with the German society "West-East BDWO".

Since October 2004 he has been giving lectures on contemporary music at the Moscow Institute of Journalism and Literary Creativity (ILLT) .

Personal life

Wife - Olga. Three daughters. The eldest - Diana, was born on May 12, 1978. Middle - Sabina. The youngest was born on January 19, 2012 ^[3] .

In connection with the crisis in Ukraine , in 2014 Letov was forced to cancel his speech: “Literally last fall, I discussed with Ukrainian left activists - the Borotba party and a group of anarcho-communists and trade union activists grouped around the Liva website - the possibility of a tour in Central and Southeastern Ukraine with the show " Eleventh ". He then aroused great interest among trade union activists, in particular from Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk. But in view of the well-known events, as far as I know, the Liva club was defeated the day after the victory of the Maidan , in February of this year. Therefore, now this tour is impossible. It is interesting that from the Ukrainian side the order for showing this film came not only from the left forces, but also from people studying the history of their native land. In the city of Zaporozhye , where I had a concert last September, the interest was precisely in the fact that the film "Eleventh" was filmed mainly in the Zaporizhzhya region : for current residents it is interesting how this area looked in 1928. I think that with the victory of the reactionary forces in Ukraine, showing this film is fundamentally impossible. If you demolished all the monuments to Lenin, then show a film about Lenin and the victory of communism - sign yourself a death sentence, cause very big troubles for everyone who takes part in it ” ^[5] .
