Career start

After graduating from the Milan seminaries of Seveso and Venegono, he graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University with a doctorate in theology. He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1957 by the Archbishop of Milan Giovanni Battista Montini , the future Pope Paul VI . In 1960 - 1989 he served in the Metropolitanate of Milan : first at a pastoral work, then a teacher at several local seminaries, he worked at the Lombard Pastoral Institute and the Scientific Committee of the International Center for the Study of the Family, was a judge of the Regional Church Tribunal of Lombardy, rector of the Papal Lombard Seminary ( 1987 - 1989 ) , Chairman of the Governing Body of the Catholic newspaper Avvenire (since April 28, 1989 ).

On July 1, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed Tettamanzi the archbishop of the modern archdiocese of Ancona-Osimo . Ordination as bishop on September 23, 1989 was made by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini , Archbishop of Milan . After being elected Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference on March 14, 1991 , Tettamanzi resigned from the post of archbishop on April 6, 1991 .

Genoa and Milan

On April 20, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed Tettamanzi as Archbishop of Genoa , and on May 25 of the same year, he also became Vice-President of the Italian Episcopal Conference. On February 21, 1998, Tettamanzi was called to the Vatican to become a member of the College of Cardinals . Papabil

Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi

With the death and burial of Pope John Paul II in 2005, intense speculation and speculation arose about the cardinal who would be elected successor of the Holy Father in the papal Conclave . The position of Cardinal Tettamanzi as the head of the Milan Metropolis , historically regarded as a stepping stone to the papacy (the Milan Metropolis is one of the richest and most influential dioceses of Italy ), as well as its charm and popularity among believers, made Tettamanzi one of the main favorites of the upcoming Conclave. He was the main Italian candidate, but the Italian cardinals are now only a minority in the College, and in the end, the German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope by the name of Benedict XVI .

It is believed that Tettamanzi spoke only Italian - this is a clear flaw at the present time, when national leaders (and especially the Pope after the era of John Paul II ) often require knowledge of foreign languages, mainly English .

According to an anonymous source, Tettamanzi in the 2005 Conclave received 2 votes in the first and second ballots.

Together with Cardinal Skola, he represented the moderate wing among the cardinals.

Dionigi Tettamanzi lost the right to participate in all future conclaves after he reached eighty years old - March 14, 2014.

On March 20, 2008 , Tettamanzi released the lecture hall of the new Ambrosian rite , previously confirmed by the Holy See , which replaces the 1976 experimental edition.

Social Learning

Tettamantsi said that the company's goal is not only to create profit for shareholders, but also that the company must be a community of men and women who work together to meet the needs of the people involved in the company. He also confirmed that a person must have stability in his work in order to be able to plan his life.

Retirement

On June 28, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Cardinal Tettamanzi from the Milan department, in connection with the achievement of the canonical age of resignation, and appointed him successor to Cardinal Skola, who had previously been the Patriarch of Venice . [3]
