Properties
Nootkaton is a colorless or yellowish liquid with the smell of grapefruit . Soluble in ethanol and organic solvents. It is insoluble in water.
Being in nature and getting
Nootkaton is found in grapefruit and some essential oils . Get it by oxidation of sesquiterpene valencene hydrocarbon, which is contained in the essential oil of orange . Valensen derived from yeast can also be turned into a nootcaton.
Application
Nootkaton is used as a component of food essences, sometimes as a component of perfume compositions.
Nootkaton-based repellents can also be effective against insects that have developed resistance to other types of chemicals, including ticks that spread diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease.
