History
Independent Moscow University was founded in 1991 by a group of famous academicians, professors and enthusiasts of mathematical training ( V. I. Arnold , S. P. Novikov , Ya. G. Sinai , L. D. Faddeev , V. M. Tikhomirov , R. L Dobrushin , V. A. Vasiliev and others). The decisive role in the creation of the University was also played by professors P. Deligne and R. MacPherson [1] , as well as the famous teacher and organizer of mathematical olympiads N. N. Konstantinov [2] . Since 2000, the President of NMU has been Yu. S. Ilyashenko [3] .
Since 2001, a program for international students Math in Moscow has been operating. American and Canadian Mathematical Societies granted scholarships for those wishing to study mathematics at Independent University for one year or a semester. There is also an exchange program with the Higher Normal School in Paris : fifth-year students and graduate students of NMU have the opportunity to study at École Normale for a month, and French students at NMU [4] . In 2002, a joint French-Russian laboratory ( Laboratoire J.-V. Poncelet ) was opened at the Independent University, and after a while it became an intensively living research center [5] .
Training
NMU as a specific university does not have a state license. Officially, it is a structural unit of the Moscow Center for Continuing Mathematical Education ; training is conducted on the basis of Appendix 001 to the license of the A series 335085, registration number 026325 , as the provision of additional educational programs (optional courses) to secondary or higher education [6] .
NMU provides a free 5-year course of study (the student has the right to shorten or increase the actual period of study based on personal needs and interests), as well as (since 1993 ) postgraduate courses. Classes are held in the evenings for the convenience of university students.
Education at NMU is based on the following principles: [7]
- no entrance exams;
- Anyone can freely attend classes;
- a volunteer who successfully passed three exams becomes a student of the university (the student of the kth semester must have at least 3k - 3 semester courses taken);
- for successful completion of the NMU, the student must pass exams and tests for all compulsory courses and for special courses (of his own choice), and at the end of training - to defend his thesis.
The university’s diploma is recognized by many leading mathematical organizations in the world: among them, for example, the Mathematical Institute named after V. A. Steklova RAS and Harvard University [5] .
