Licorice ( lat. Glycyrrhíza , from other Greek. Γλυκύ- + ῥίζα “sweet root”) is a genus of herbaceous plants of the legume family ( Fabaceae ).

Representatives of the genus are almost cosmopolitan ; they are found in the temperate and subtropical zones of Eurasia and America , in North Africa and Australia .

Botanical Description
Perennial grasses with thickened creeping rhizome .
Leaves are pinnate, often sticky.
The flowers are usually lilac, in axillary hands .
The fruit is a bean with 1-8 seeds.
Meaning and Application
Licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) is used in medicine in the treatment of respiratory diseases [2] . It has mucolytic (thinning sputum) and antitussive effects. [3]

In Russia - 7 species, mainly in the steppe , semi-desert and desert zones. The most common licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) - in the south of the European part , the Caucasus and Ural licorice ( Glycyrrhiza uralensis ) - in the south of the Urals and Western Siberia .
