Diego Nunez de Avendaño was the son of a famous Spanish lawyer and writer Piedro Núñez de Avendaño.

At the beginning of his career, he worked as a lawyer with the royal council. In 1565, he received the privilege from King Philip II to publish his father's writings.

Later he held various posts, and soon he was appointed president of the royal audience of Lima.

In 1606, Viceroy Gaspard de Zuniga died in Peru, after which Diego Nunez, as the highest official, headed the colony on a temporary basis. Soon, in 1607, Diego Nunez de Avendaño passed away. A document sent by a certain doctor Alberto de Akunya dated February 15, 1607 was sent to the audience with a request to send a new viceroy in place of Sunig Azevedo y Fonseca, who had died earlier.

Soon, the new Viceroy Juan de Mendoza and Luna arrived in Peru from New Spain .
