Biography

Seishiro Itagaki was born in Morioka ( Iwate Prefecture ). In 1904, Rikugun graduated from the Sikan Gakko , took part in the Russo-Japanese War .

In 1924-1926, Itagaki was a military attaché in China, and upon returning to Japan held various posts in the General Staff in 1926-1927, after which he was appointed commander of the 33rd Infantry Brigade of the 10th Division stationed in China. After serving in this post, in 1928 Itagaki was transferred to the post of commander of the 33rd Infantry Regiment of the Kwantung Army .

Since 1931, Itagaki became the head of the intelligence department of the Kwantung Army, and in this position became one of the participants in the Japanese invasion of Manchuria . In 1932-1934 he was also a military adviser in Manzhou , in 1934 he became deputy chief of staff of the Kwantung army, in 1936 - chief of staff of the Kwantung army.

In the years 1937-1938, in the early stages of the Sino-Japanese war , Itagaki commanded the 5th division stationed in China, which played a major role in the Battle of Beijing-Tianjin , the Chakhar operation and the Battle of Taiyuan . However, during the Battle of Xuzhou, the attack of his division was repelled during the battle of Taierzhuang , which did not allow her to come to the aid of the 10th division of Rensuke Isogai .

Having been recalled to Japan in 1938, Itagaki spent some time as Minister of the Army (1938-1939). Then he was again returned to China, where in 1939-1941 he headed the headquarters of the Expeditionary Army . However, the defeat of the Japanese troops from the Red Army in the battles at Khalkhin Gol dealt a severe blow to his reputation, and he was transferred to the rear post of the commander of the Japanese forces in Korea . As a result of the deterioration of the general military situation, Japanese troops in Korea were converted into the 17th front in 1945, and Itagaki became its commander. In April 1945, he was transferred to the post of commander of the 7th Front , stationed in Singapore , and in this capacity surrendered to the British after the surrender of Japan.

After the war, he was charged with war crimes, was found guilty at paragraphs 1, 27, 29, 31, 32, 35, 36, and 54 at the Tokyo trial , and sentenced to death. Seishiro Itagaki was hanged in Sugamo Tokyo Prison on December 23, 1948.
