Story
The action of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings begins shortly after the events of The Witcher and also takes place in the world of books by Andrzej Sapkowski . The main character is still the witcher Geralt of Rivia [13] . According to Andrzej Sapkowski, he did not participate in the development of the plot of the game and did not even know about its creation [14] [15] .
The plot, in comparison with the first part of the game, has become more developed. It is also known that in the story the main character will travel a lot, and powerful magic will be involved in the game plot [13] . The developers have ensured a high level of replayability, and by the middle of the game, possible plot development options can be very different from each other [10] .
The end of the prologue ended with an attempt on King Voltest. Geralt could not prevent the assassination attempt and missed the mysterious killer who had "witch" eyes. In The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Geralt was charged with the murder of Foltest and he will have to go investigate the crime and restore his reputation [10] .
Gameplay
The game has finalized and significantly changed the gameplay compared to the previous part. One of the innovations was the ability to overcome small obstacles in the form of fences and some buildings [16] . The combat system of the game has been redesigned [13] . Battles are like slashers. The combo will remain, however, the Quick Time Events (QTE) system has been implemented [16] . As in the first part, the game has bosses (huge monsters or strong people, sometimes witches). The average passage of the game takes more than 40 hours [17] .
Game Engine
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings uses a completely new multiplatform [18] game engine [19] [20] called the “ RED Engine ”, developed by CD Projekt RED specifically for the game. As a physical engine , Havok of the development of the company of the same name is used .
According to the developers, the “RED Engine” focuses not only on graphics and physics, but also on building a non-linear quest system [18] [21] .
The graphics engine supports dynamic shadows, normal mapping and parallax mapping [22] . Compared to the first part of the game , texture detail has been improved, and the change of time of day and weather events have become more realistic [22] .
Creation History
The development of the game “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” began in 2007 by the CD Projekt RED team, immediately after the development of the game “The Witcher ” [13] .
The first mention of CD Projekt 's unannounced projects appeared on November 9, 2008, when the Polish gaming portal gram.pl managed to find out from Michal Kiciński ( Polish: Michał Kiciński ) some information about the games being developed. According to that information, CD Projekt developed in parallel 4 games: 2 games were developed directly by CD Projekt RED , the third game was developed with the then-unknown French studio with the support of CD Projekt RED, and the fourth game was the shooter “ They ”, developed by Metropolis Software [23] [24] .
New information about "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" appeared on April 28 and 29, 2009 , during the process associated with the cancellation of " The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf ", a remake of the original "The Witcher" for game consoles. It became known that one of the two games that CD Projekt RED directly and independently developed was “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings”, and the third game, which CD Projekt RED was developing together with the already well-known French developer WideScreen Games , was actually "The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf" [25] [26] [27] .
The next piece of information appeared on June 14, 2009, when in an interview with the Polish gaming magazine CD Action, co-owner of CD Projekt Michal Kichinsky announced the development of The Witcher 2 and the release date for the game is 2010 [28] [29] . However, a few days later CD Projekt represented by Michal Kichinsky officially denied this information. According to Kichinsky, this information appeared as a result of improper editing by the magazine “CD Action” of his statements. “The interview was edited by CD Action without notifying me about it, and after the changes, the meaning of my answer regarding plans for the future of our studio turned out to be significantly distorted,” Kichinsky explained [30] [31] [32] .

On September 16, 2009, a video appeared on YouTube showing the alpha version of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings . The video is a demonstration of the gameplay and technology of the alpha version of the game, and was intended for internal use [22] [33] [34] .
On September 18, 2009, CD Projekt RED officially confirmed the development of the game. Adam Kichinsky ( Polish: Adam Kiciński ), CEO of CD Projekt RED, commented on the “leaked” video and stated that the video was already six months old and the developers were currently looking for a publisher [35] [36] [37] [38] [39 ] :
| Of course, we cannot and do not want to try to refute these facts. The video, which appeared on many sites yesterday, shows our new project “The Witcher 2”, on which we have been working for some time. We made this video six months ago to demonstrate the first playable version. We are currently looking for a potential publisher (or publishers) for this game, and this leak is an uncontrolled side effect of this process. To date, we are not commenting on anything regarding the game itself. |
However, it was officially announced that this video in no way shows the final quality of the game, and the game itself is still in a stage of deep development [19] [20] .
On September 22, 2009, the Polish gaming website GRY-OnLine interviewed senior game producer Tomasz Gop ( Polish Tomasz Gop ), in which he answered several questions. Thanks to this interview, it turned out that the development of the second part of The Witcher was carried out by the same team that developed the first part of the game - CD Projekt RED , as well as information about the leaked video, engine, development process and target platforms [19] [20] [40 ] ] [41] [42] .

On November 5, 2009, the alpha version of “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” was first shown to reporters. This happened at the Russian computer games exhibition IgroMir 2009 by senior producer of CD Projekt RED Tomasz Gop ( Polish Tomasz Gop ) with the participation of Snowball Studios [43] . The alpha version was shown only to a limited contingent of individuals; it was forbidden to shoot video. At this presentation, Tomasz Gop told what to expect from the game. In addition, it became known that 1C will be the publisher in Russia , and Snowball Studios will be the localizer. Moreover, CD Projekt cooperates with 1C directly, since in Europe the publisher has not yet been determined. It was also announced about the approximate release date of the game - the end of 2010 [1] [2] . This presentation was attended by representatives of the magazine “ Country of Games ”, which the day after the presentation published an article about her and “The Witcher 2” [10] .
On November 14, 2009, a video was uploaded to YouTube , secretly shot at a private presentation on IgroMir [44] , which depicts the gameplay of the game with comments by developers, as well as the scene of Geralt’s battle with tentacles of a huge land “octopus” ( kraken ) called Tentadrake [16 ] ( Eng. Tentadrake , the name of the monster after release is Keiran) [45] .
On November 17, 2009, a meeting between the shareholders of CD Projekt Investment and Optimus was held, after which the founders of CD Projekt Investment opened some information to the newspaper Polygamia.pl about “The Witcher 2”. It turned out that about 80 people are working on the development of the game (a joint team of CD Projekt RED and Metropolis Software ). The game will use a multi-platform engine , focused not only on visualization and physics, but also on the creation of non-linear quests. It also became known that the publisher is likely to be announced in the first quarter of 2010 , and this time CD Projekt RED does not want to collaborate with large publishers [18] [21] [46] . In addition, Adam Kichinsky commented on the “leaked” video from Game World 2009. He confirmed that this video really shows the gameplay “The Witcher 2”, shot during Game World [47] [48] :
| It was a closed demonstration for business partners, representatives of the largest publishing companies and a handful of selected journalists - one of the many standard demonstrations of the same type that CD Projekt RED held in different countries. Unfortunately, despite the ban on video filming and photographing at all such events, someone managed to still make a video on IgroMir. Like last time, we will not comment on this. However, we can assure you that all supporting information will be disclosed immediately after the official announcement of the game. |
On November 21, 2009, the Russian-language fan site of the game “ The Chronicles of Caer Morhen ” published a preview of the game, which brought together all the facts about it [16] .

Initially, the DLC was exclusive for players who bought a collector's or gift edition or ordered a game in one of the online stores (partners of CD Project Red). But due to problems encountered when loading the DLC, all downloadable content can be obtained with any copy of the game. The developer of the game CD Project Red included all the exclusive additions in patch 1.2, and they became available to absolutely all players, regardless of the copy of the game.

Answering fans' questions on Facebook , a CD Projekt RED spokesperson said most Witcher 2 DLCs would be free. The developers plan to release paid additional content for The Witcher 2, but these will be major plot additions that add several hours of play.

At Gamescom 2012 , CD Projekt RED held a series of demos of editing tools called REDkit, designed to create custom modifications of The Witcher 2 [54] . In May 2013, the studio announced the beginning of an open beta testing of the editor of modifications , and then posted the editor to the network for download [55] [56] .

The project was very well received by critics, the vast majority of reviews positively characterized the game.
The Games-TV portal praised the game, setting the highest score in its review - “CD Projekt RED made an exemplary RPG! Spectacular, modern, but not forgetting the roots ” [66] .
The publication " Igromaniya " positively commented on the game - "A rare case: we have a game that almost completely meets our expectations." This is a large (up to 20 hours only on the main storyline) RPG, which gives the player a fairly wide freedom of choice and does not forget that he, generally speaking, needs to be entertained ” [67] . The game received 9 out of 10 points and took third place in the nomination "RPG of the year" (2011). Summing up the results of the year, the editors noted that “having lost a little in originality (the vengeance in the role and combat system has become smaller), the second“ The Witcher ”obviously acquired in colors, scale and direction” [68] .
The Playground Internet portal described the game in its review article “Verdict: one of the best RPGs in history, worthy of taking its place alongside the titans of the genre” [69] .
In the PC review, Games lamented a little about managing in the PC version, but at the same time consider that “the world created by Polish craftsmen in the second“ The Witcher ”is so good and persistent that much can be forgiven for this game and its creators” [61] .
Country of the Games : “But in general, The Witcher 2 leaves a dual feeling: as if it were an old-school hardcore RPG in modern RPG decorations. Inside the game, Geralt, a hunter of magic monsters, doesn’t feel very confident in the world of political intrigues, where monsters in human form rule over everyone. ” [62]
The magazine “ Best Computer Games ” notes that despite the extremely high level of execution, “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” lost many successful details of the first part and added a lot of unsuccessful ones. “The insanely beautiful role-playing game in the world of Sapkowski is almost perfect, if you do not know about the existence of the first“ The Witcher “. The new project took a big step towards the conveyor. It is as if it was assembled from a designer, glued from “tested” role elements and sometimes strives to fall apart at the seams. ” [63]
In May 2011, during a visit to Poland as part of his European tour, US President Barack Obama made a laudatory speech about Poland’s achievements in the global economy, in particular highlighting the game about Geralt, which won the love of players around the world. However, Obama immediately admitted that he is not very well versed in video games, and he did not play Witcher at all [70] [71] [72] . Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk presented him with a special edition of the game, as well as an iPad with Polish films and books in English installed on it [73] .
