Production

Development

In October 2015, executive producer of the original television series Henry Winkler became the producer of the remake along with James Wang and R. Scott Gemmil for CBS [9] , which owns the rights to "Secret Agent McGyver" through the purchase of the original Paramount Television. In February 2016, it was announced that CBS had given the green light to the production of a pilot episode written by Paul Daws Colazzo, directed by Wang [10] . Van was unable to direct him due to schedule conflicts and was replaced by David von Anken [11] .

In May 2016, the channel officially ordered the series. Co-creator and executive producer Peter M. Lenkov was appointed showrunner [12] . On May 18, 2016, CBS released the first trailer for the new television series [13] . In June 2016, the channel rejected the original pilot episode, and Van directed a new pilot [14] .

Casting

In March 2016, it was announced that Lucas Till will play the role of the new McGyver ; Joshua Boone will play Gunnar, McGyver’s best friend from high school; and the former star of the series CSI: Crime Scene , George Eads - Jack Dalton (who originally bore the name Lincoln), a man who can be described as both an eccentric conspiracy theorist and a compassionate government employee. [15] Later, the cast replenished with Addison Timlin , who got the role of Mickey, an application developer with very progressive political views and a weakness for McGyver; and Michelle Krusik , who received the role of Agent Kriks, Dalton's sister, working for the Department of Homeland Security [16] . However, the original pilot episode with this cast was rejected by CBS in June 2016, and only Till and Eeds remained in the revised new pilot episode from the original cast [14] .

Around the same time that the new pilot was commissioned, Justin Hyers got the role of Wilt Bozer, McGyver’s flatmate [17] . In July 2016, Variety magazine reported that Sandrine Holt joined the cast as Patricia Thornton, a former field agent and now serving as head of the Department of External Services [18] . In addition, the role in the series was given to Tristin Mays - her character Riley Davis, an unpredictable hacker with a chip in his shoulder [19] .

Criticism Reviews

The television series McGyver received mostly negative reviews from television critics, many of whom called it unsuccessful compared to the original, some praised (and some criticized) CBS for the remake.

On the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator site, the show has 25% freshness. The critical consensus of the site is: “Despite compiling countless TV procedures from successful storylines, McGyver failed to create an engaging show” [20] . On Metacritic, the series shows a similar rating - 38 points out of 100, based on "generally negative reviews" [21] .
