Church of St. Nicholas (St. Nicholas Cathedral, Church of St. Nicholas the White) - Orthodox Cathedral Church of the Serpukhov Deanery of the Moscow Diocese . Located in the historic center of the city at the intersection of Kaluga Street with Sovetskaya (Kaluzhskaya, 26/12).

History
In place of the modern cathedral in the XVI century - early XVII century, a wooden temple, mentioned in the inventories of Serpukhov in 1552 and 1620 . By 1649, a stone church was built here, presumably the work of Yaroslavl masters.
In 1713, on the initiative of Mikhail Popov, clerk of the Zemstvo hut Serpukhov, a decree was issued on the construction of a new stone church of limestone. The work was completed in March 1721 . The construction consisted of a quadrangle crowned with one chapter with an altar extension, which had symmetrically arranged tent-shaped finishes above the altar and deacon .
The next project for the reconstruction of the temple was developed in 1831 by the architects Tamansky and Shestakov. Construction was carried out from 1833 to 1857 .
In 1929, the cathedral was closed, the bell tower was partially destroyed. Returned to the church in 1995 . In 2005, it was solemnly consecrated after restoration. Two new chapels of the Mother of God “Assistance to the Clans” and the New Martyrs of Serpukhov were created.
Architectural Features
The Cathedral is a representative of the Moscow Empire . The building material is brick, white stone is used in the decor elements. The walls of the temple are plastered. It is a quad with one apse and two side porch-porches, carrying a dome rotunda. From the west, the four-pillar refectory and multi-tier bell tower are adjacent to the main volume of the building.
Interesting Facts
- On June 2, 1924, the temple was visited by Patriarch Tikhon, who granted the temple the status of a cathedral.
- On the bell tower of the temple is the largest city bell. It was cast in the Yaroslavl region from an alloy of bronze, silver and copper. The bell weighs 5 tons (tongue 150 kilograms). According to church rules, such giants must be given their own name, which has not yet been invented. But to distinguish it from other bells is possible not only in size. A large inscription is made along the edge of the bell: "This bell was lit in the summer of 2003 from Christmas to the presidency of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, to the church of St. Nicholas the White, in the city of Serpukhov under the rector Archpriest Vladimir Andreev, with the care and joy of God's servants Michael, Marina, Mary, Irina. " These names belong to the family members of the main patron of the restoration of the church, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SU-155 , Mikhail Dmitrievich Balakin .
- On July 28, 2005, the temple was visited by Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II.
- In the Soviet years, the temple housed a pasta factory.
