Biography

Gonzalez was born in 1955 in San Antonio , Texas , in a poor family of Mexican descent and spent his childhood in Houston .

From 1973 to 1975 he served in the US Air Force , and from 1977 to 1979 he studied at the Air Force Academy. Gonzalez also attended Rice University and the Harvard Law School , after which from 1982 to 1994 he worked at the Houston law firm Vinson & Elkins.

In 1994, the former Texas Governor, George W. Bush , appointed him his legal adviser. Subsequently, Gonzalez also served as Secretary of State for Texas (1997-1999) and was a member of the State Supreme Court (1999-2001). As president, Bush Jr. appointed Gonzalez as legal adviser to the White House (2001-2005). In this post, Gonzalez was one of the main ideologists of the policy regarding prisoners captured in Afghanistan and Iraq , arguing for the right of the authorities to detain any suspected terrorist for an indefinite period. After the scandal over the torture of prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison, one of Gonzalez’s memoranda dated 2002, in which he argued that the provisions of the Geneva Convention was inappropriate for the militants of Al Qaeda and the Taliban, became public. This has made the legal adviser the object of criticism from many human rights defenders.

Gonzalez’s policy regarding prisoners was the main reason why his candidacy for the post of Attorney General, put forward in 2004, raised serious objections in the Senate . However, on February 3, 2005, the Senate nevertheless approved him as prosecutor general.

In March 2007, it became known that Gonzalez dismissed eight federal prosecutors, citing their political unreliability. The investigation established that the presidential administration had already hatched plans to dismiss all federal prosecutors, and the deputy head of the administration, Karl Rove , played an important role in this matter [3] . In the same year, Gonzalez was charged with false testimony in a case concerning a telephone wiretapping program. As a result, in August he filed for resignation [4] and officially left his post on September 17, 2007.

In August 2009, he began working as a professor of political science at Texas Tech . Gonzalez is married, has three children.

On February 2, 2016, the Russian Federation was included in the sanctions list of people who have been denied entry to the country in accordance with Federal Law 272-ФЗ “On measures to influence individuals involved in the violation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens of the Russian Federation” [5] .
