Biography
Louis de Funes de Galarza was born July 31, 1914 in Courbevoie . Parents of the future star of the French and world screen were born in Spanish Seville . His father, Carlos Luis de Funes de Galarza, received a law degree, but after moving to France he became a diamond cutter . Mother was of Spanish and Portuguese roots. Louis's parents moved to France in 1904 to officially marry, as their families were against this marriage in their homeland.
As a child, Louis de Funes friends called "Fufu." The boy knew French, Spanish and English well. In his youth he was fond of drawing and playing the piano . It is not surprising that in the end Louis became a pianist, playing mainly jazz on Pigalle . Visitors to the institution sincerely had fun watching the musician grimacing during the game.
In 1936, Louis de Funes married Germaine Louise Elodie Carroie. The young couple had a son, Daniel ( July 12, 1937 - January 23, 2017 [1] ), but at the end of 1942 they divorced.
During the occupation of Paris by German troops, Louis de Funes taught solfeggio at a music school, where he fell in love with secretary Jeanne Augustine de Barthelemy de Maupassant, the granddaughter of the famous writer Guy de Maupassant . She reciprocated "to a little man who played jazz like a god." The lovers married in 1943 and lived together for 40 years, until the death of Louis de Funes in 1983. In this marriage two sons were born - Patrick (born January 27, 1944 ) and Olivier (born August 11, 1949 ).
After the war, de Funes tries himself in cinema; Louis previously attended the drama courses of Rene Simon . In 1945, starred in the film "The Barbizon Temptation " directed by Jean Steli. This picture did not bring much fame to the beginning actor.
In the film " Not Caught - Not a Thief " directed by Yves Robert , shot in 1958 , de Funes gets the main role - the poacher Blair. This film brings him fame. After the film was released on a wide screen abroad, the main character was nicknamed Donald Duck . In Russia, this film is better known as "Blero".
The 1960s brought de Funes real popularity and audience recognition; Each year, the actor starred in three or four films. Another success comes from the role of Commissioner Juve in the Fantômas trilogy directed by Andre Younebel . It was originally planned to shoot ten episodes about the adventures of the famous criminal, but the rental of the last part of the trilogy, the film Fantomas vs Scotland Yard , showed that popularity was falling and the director decided not to shoot.
Other acting work, such as The Big Walk and Razinya , was enthusiastically received by tens of millions of viewers around the world. As well as a serial film about the adventures of the Gendarme and his subordinates, filmed in the 1960s . Louis de Funes himself spoke of his acting career as follows:
| I do not regret the slow development of my career. This slowness helped me understand my profession thoroughly. When I was still unknown, I tried to color with the details, facial expressions, gestures the small roles that were entrusted to me. Thus, I acquired some comic baggage, without which I could not have made a career. Therefore, if you start again, then I would not give up this path. |
In the 1970s , de Funes was still a popular and beloved actor. He continued to act actively and on March 15, 1973 was awarded the highest award in France: the Order of the Legion of Honor .
In 1975, de Funes survived two heart attacks at once. At the insistence of doctors, the actor left the cinema and moved to the 17th-century country estate Chateau de Clermont near Nantes , where he enthusiastically engaged in growing roses [2] . One of the varieties of roses obtained by the company " Meyan ", named after him [3] .
However, de Funes could not refuse Claude Zidi's offer to star in the film “ Wing or Leg ”. After filming in this picture, the actor brilliantly played in several more. The film " Gendarme and Gendarmes " was the last in his film career.
Louis de Funes died of a heart attack on January 27, 1983 .
