Life

Born in Rome , and was unanimously elected as the successor to Pope Sergius II. By the time of his election on April 10, 847, Leo was Cardinal Santi-Quattro-Coronati , a subdeacon of Pope Gregory IV, and Archpriest under Sergius. His pontificate was dedicated to the restoration of the damage caused by the Saracens during the days of the pontificate of his predecessor to various structures of the city, especially the basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul.

The Saracens besieged Gaeta , which forced Lev to order the restoration and strengthening of the walls of Rome between 848 and 849 years . When Muslims approached Portus, he called Naples , Gaeta and Amalfi to form an anti-Saracen league. The command of the combined fleet was entrusted to Caesar, son of Duke Sergius I of Naples . The ensuing battle of Ostia became one of the most famous in the history of the medieval papacy and is displayed on the famous fresco by Raphael and his students in the halls of the Vatican Palace. Another episode of the life of Leo is marked in Urbino in a series of frescoes, on which the Pope, according to legend, stops the fire in the Roman district of the pilgrims of Borgo with a sign of the cross.

Battle of Ostia

In order to ultimately eliminate the Saracen threat, Leo ordered the construction of a new line of walls covering Rome and the suburbs on the right bank of the Tiber in order to protect previously defenseless buildings, including St. Peter’s Basilica. Subsequently, this wall was named Leoninsky wall . He also restored and decorated the damaged basilica of San Paolo-fuor-les-Moure and St. Peter: the altar of the latter was again decorated with gold and studded with precious stones. After the restoration of the Cathedral of St. Peter, Leo appealed to the Christian kingdoms to unite in order to counter the Arab raiders [1] .

Leo held three cathedrals, one in 850 , excellent in that the Holy Roman Emperor Louis II was present.

Leo died on July 17, 855, and was buried in St. Peter's Basilica.

According to legend, Pope John became the successor of Leo [2] .

Burial

Lev was originally buried in a separate tomb, but a few years after his death, his remains were placed in a tomb that contained the ashes of the first four popes named Leo. In the XVIII century, the relics of Leo IV were separated from others and received a separate tomb [3] .
