Biography

Family

  • Father - Mikhail Petrovich Samsonov, originally from the village of Prokshino, Alekseevsky district of the Tula province (now in the Serpukhov district of the Moscow region ), worked as a cashier in the Nizhny Novgorod association of the State Bank.
  • Mother - Maria Karpovna, originally from the city of Skopin, Ryazan province .
  • Brothers Vladimir (d. 1924) and Boris, as well as sister Nina.

Milestones

He studied at the Nizhny Novgorod second-level school. N. G. Chernyshevsky. In 1927 he entered the Leningrad State University at the faculty of Soviet law. I rented a room on Vasilievsky Island .

In 1931 he graduated from university, in 1932 he completed active military service, in 1933-1936 he worked in the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Mass Extramural Education under the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks (LOIMZO) as an assistant professor of the USSR History Department. For two years he was a history teacher in high school of the 9th school of the Vasileostrovsky district.

In October 1938, he began working as a junior researcher at the Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , was a lecturer at the Political Department of the Kirov Railway.

Shortly before the war with Finland, he was mobilized into the Red Banner Baltic Fleet and sent to the political department of the 61st Air Force Brigade, located in New Peterhof. After the end of the Soviet-Finnish war, the demobilized Samsonov moved to Moscow, where he wanted to go to work at the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences , but there were no vacant places. He worked as a journalist.

At the beginning of World War II, he continued cooperation with the political department of the 61st Air Force Air Brigade, sending materials from a brigade newspaper there from Moscow. After the start of the fighting on the streets of Peterhof, communications with the brigade were interrupted. Later he fought in the ranks of the 3rd Guards Stalingrad Mechanized Corps. In 1944 - on the 1st Baltic Front . He was awarded orders and medals [2] . Member of the CPSU (b) since March 1943 .

“Starting to master the profession of a historian, in the prewar years I was most interested in the popular movements of the era of feudalism. However, later he switched to the latest history, ”recalled A. M. Samsonov [3] . Junior researcher (1948-1949), scientific secretary of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1949-1951). In 1950 he defended his thesis “Combat Path of the 3rd Guards Stalingrad Mechanized Corps”; in 1961, a doctor’s degree in historical sciences was awarded for the monograph “The Battle of Stalingrad”.

In 1961-1970 - Director of the Publishing House of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (from 1964 - “ Science ”), was removed from work for the publication of the book by A. M. Nekrich “1941, June 22”. Since 1970 - a senior research fellow at the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences . Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1964. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since December 29, 1981.

The initiator of the publication and one of the authors of the series of books "The Second World War in Research, Memoirs, Documents" (1966-1975), editor of a number of books in this series. Executive editor of the X volume of the publication "History of the USSR from Ancient Times to the Present Day" (1973). Editor-in-chief of the collection Historical Notes (1969-1990) and the book series Monuments of Historical Thought (1981-1992), deputy chairman of the editorial board of the series Literary Monuments . He was a member of the editorial board of the series "Academic Readings" of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

He died on April 5, 1992 . He was buried in Moscow at the Troekurovsky cemetery [4] .
