Biography
Born in Odessa . The sixth of seven children is Joseph Zvi Frenkel and Jocheved Kasher. The great-grandson of the famous tzaddik Leiv-Yitzchok from Berdichev . He studied at the art school of Odessa under A. A. Exter (1917). Since 1919 he lived in Eretz Yisrael . In 1920 he organized an art cooperative in Jaffa and a studio for artists in Herzliya. Then he leaves for Paris , where he studies at the School of Fine Arts and the Academy of Chamier, a student of the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle and the artist Henri Matisse . In 1924, exhibited at the Salon of Independents in Paris .
In 1925, I. Frenkel returned and opened a fine art studio at the Histadrut School in Tel Aviv . Among his students were Shimshon Goltzman, Mordechai Levanon, David Gendler, Joseph Kosonogi and Zion Tayar. I. Frenkel was also a teacher of graduates of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design Avigdor Stematsky , Ieheckel Streichman, Moshe Castel and Arie Aroch .
After five years spent in Paris, the artist settled in Safed in 1934, long before the appearance of the famous quarter of artists in this city. I. Frenkel-Fresnel is a laureate of many prizes and awards, including the Dizengoff Prize, he is also a participant in the first and second Venice Biennale (1950).
In 1973, the artist’s museum was opened in the house where he lived in Safed. The artworks are in the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem .
