Helmut Marko ( German: Helmut Marko , April 27, 1943 , Graz ) is an Austrian race car driver , a participant in the Formula 1 World Championship racing. Winner of the 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours Race.

Biography

Initially, he studied law, received a doctorate in law. In the 1960s he made his debut in Formula V racing, in 1969 he participated in the Formula 3 competition. The next year he moved to racing sports cars, where he finished third in his first participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. In 1971, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, setting a record for a maximum distance of 5335 kilometers, which lasted until 2010, won three races of the European sports car championship in a 2-liter class and took part in five World Championship Grand Prix “Formula 1” (did not start at the German Grand Prix because of the fuel that ended in qualification).

In 1972, three times won prizes at the stages of the world championship of sports cars and participated in the world championship "Formula 1". At the French Grand Prix of 1972, he was injured when a stone flying out from under the wheel of a car that was ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi struck his helmet and injured his eye, which caused Marco to end his racing career. Later he was the manager of racers Gerhard Berger and Karl Wendlinger , created his own racing team RSM Marko, who won the Formula 3000 in 1996 and led the training program for the riders at Red Bull - Red Bull Junior Team . Since 2005, he has been a consultant to Red Bull Racing .
