Military service in the Russian army
Born in the family of a priest, brother of philologist Andrei Zagrodsky . He graduated from three classes of the Kiev Theological Seminary , a rural teacher. In 1912 he was drafted into the army, served in the 74th Stavropol Infantry Regiment , stationed in Uman , since 1913 - junior non-commissioned officer, in 1914 - senior non-commissioned officer. In June 1914 he passed the test for the rank of ensign (promoted to rank in August of the same year). Member of the First World War , went the way to the captain , was wounded three times. Awarded with St. George's Weapon .
Ukrainian officer
Since November 1917 - commander of the Kiev guard regiment of troops of the Central Council . A participant in the battles against the Bolshevik troops of Mikhail Muravyov near Konotop , Darnitsa , in the defense of Kiev . Since February 9, 1918 - the commander of the 1st Zaporozhye smoking of troops of the Central Council. Since March 15, 1918 - the commander of the 1st Zaporizhzhya Doroshenkovsky regiment , deployed from Kuren after returning to Kiev. He actively supported the uprising against the hetman. Since November 16, 1918 - the commander of the Zaporizhzhya division of troops of the Directory , operating in the Kharkov province. Since December 19 of the same year - at the same time commander of Ukrainian troops in the Kharkov region. Since February 28, 1919 - at the same time assistant commander of the Eastern Front of the UNR Army. March 21, 1919 became part of the so-called revolutionary Rada in Vapnyark , created under the leadership of Ataman Yemelyan Volokh and advocating peace with the Bolsheviks. Subsequently, the activities of Volokh, who sided with the Reds in December 1919, did not support.
In May 1919, he was the commander of the 6th Zaporizhzhya division , and on June 10, 1919, he was an assistant to the chief of the Zaporizhzhya group of the UNR Army. From September 1 to September 10, 1919 - and. about. the commander of the Zaporizhzhya group, from September 10 - the commander of the Volyn group of this army. During the First Winter Campaign of 1919-1920 he was the head of the Consolidated Volyn Division. In February-April 1920 he was ill with typhus and was treated in his native village. From May 15, 1920 - the head of the 2nd Volyn Archery Division of the UPR Army, then was interned with the army. Member of the military opposition against the chief ataman Simon Petlyura .

Emigrant
Since 1923 he lived in Kalisz ( Poland ), headed the Union of Ukrainian Disabled. Since 1944 - in Austria , since 1950 - in the USA . Honorary member of the Union of Former Ukrainian Soldiers in America, head of the Presidium of the Order of the Iron Cross (Order of the UPR). He was buried in the Orthodox cemetery in South Bound Brook .
