Since 2001, after gaining a mass of 587 kg, he was not able to leave the bed. In 2007, his weight was 560 kg, and he was the heaviest person living.

Manuel Uribe appealed for help on television. There were many proposals to perform a bariatric operation aimed at reducing mass, but he refused it, deciding to lose weight with proper nutrition. Uribe began to adhere to a protein diet, and by 2007 its weight decreased to 381 kg. For the first time in many years, he went out on his own.

In 2006, Manuel met 36-year-old Claudia Solis, who from time to time came to cut Manuel's hair and nails. Then her visits grew into a friendship that continued, despite protests from relatives of Claudia. In October 2008, Manuel made her an offer, which the woman accepted.
