History

For the first time such a Novgorod street was mentioned in chronicles under 1300 ( on Boyan ulka [1] ), according to dendrochronology, the lower tier of the bridge discovered during excavations is attributed to the 1120s . In historical sources, the name of the street is known in two forms, both Boyana Street (for example, the XIV century) and Buyana (XV-XVI centuries). In the XVI century, there were 30 courtyards on the street. The modern street route is close to the historical position of the street determined by archaeological excavations and scribe books of 1582/1583. Then the street was called Buyanovskaya .

The name of the street comes from the ancient Slavic name Boyan . Evgeny (Bolkhovitinov) wrote about the name of Buyanovskaya Street:

“You know that in Novgorod there is a street, from ancient times until now called Buyana. And in the chronicler of Novgorod, published from the oldest “haraite” list in Moscow, this street is called Boyana. Since in ancient times, in Novgorod many streets have been nicknamed by the names of famous people, as for example: Dobrynin, Yanev, Ryaddin, Borkov, Shcherkova, Ivorov, Korzhov, Molotkov, Bordov, Ilyin and others; why not think that Boyana was also called from Boyan? ”That is, she was named after the famous storyteller and singer of Kievan Rus“ the prophetic Boyan ”.

In 1556 , near Volkhov, on the courtyard of the Khutynsky monastery , which was located at that time, the church of the Virgin of Odigardia was built on Buyan Street , later after the fire it was restored and illuminated in the name of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God . In 1794, the church was demolished along with the buildings of the compound of the Khutynsky monastery, in connection with the new regular development plan for Novgorod N. Chicheren in 1778 [2] .

After the October Revolution of 1917, Buyanovskaya Street was renamed Oborony Street, and Rogatinskaya Street [3] was renamed Bolshevikov Street. On April 1, 1946, by the decision of the Executive Committee of the City Council, the name " Bolshevikov Street " was extended to the modern Boyana Street.

The modern street route runs from Alexander Nevsky Embankment , which runs along the right bank of the Volkhov River , to the southeast - to Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street , has an intersection with Palace Street . Among the group of buildings of the Novgorod television center, located at 8a Boyana Street , there is the highest building of the historical part of the city - the Novgorod TV tower . The newest building on the street is a bank (house 7a).

Excavation Excavation

In 1967, a group of archaeologists of the Novgorod Archaeological Expedition led by V. L. Yanin and A. S. Khoroshev excavated on an area of 160 m² in the territory of the modern Telecentre [4] .

During the survey, the remains of the pavement flooring of the ancient Buyanaya Street were discovered. Studied the remains of a manor building. Among the many finds, 9 birch bark letters were also found.
