Biography

Born in St. Petersburg, in the family of the trusted Russian Commercial and Industrial Bank Gustav (Gutman) Lazarevich Berman and Lydia Borisovna Manasevich, brother of the artist Leonid Berman , half-brother of ballet historian and theater critic Anatoly Shajkevich . Grandson of the founder of the first Jewish schools in Mitau and St. Petersburg, Lazar Yakovlevich Berman , editor and publisher of the Russian Jewry weekly; Palestinian nephew, publicist Wulf (Vasily) Lazarevich Berman and mathematician Savely Ospiovich Voitinsky .

After the death of his father in 1906, he was brought up in the family of his stepfather — a Petersburg banker and collector, attorney at law, Efim Grigorievich Shaikevich . [2] He studied in private studios of St. Petersburg. From 1919 he lived in Paris , studied at the Academy of Ranson , among his teachers were members of the creative team Nabi .

In 1926, Eugene, together with his brother, artist Leonid Berman, is exhibited in the Druet Gallery (Druet) (1926), together with Pavel Chelishchev and other graduates of the Ranson Academy. The work of the artist was influenced by Giorgio de Chirico. The exhibition in Druet , according to the declaration of the participants, was supposed to open a new direction in painting - neohumanism. In 1927, the neo-humanists held an exhibition in Gal. Pierre Loeb. Participant of the exhibition of contemporary French art in Moscow (1928).

Exhibited in the United States, in particular in the gallery J. Levy .

In 1939, E. Berman emigrated to the United States and is engaged in theater and book graphics. Decorator of ballet theaters [3] . Accepted US citizenship. In the mid-50s, he left for Italy and left to live and work in Rome.
