Russula bresadolae Schulzer , 1885

Description

The cap reaches 4–9 (rarely up to 12) cm in diameter, first hemispherical, then convex and flattened to a dent, fleshy, in a slightly pointed or dull edge. The peel of the hat is smooth or obscurely furrowed along the edge, colored very varied: from violet-red in the center and raspberry closer to the edge to wine-red in the center and pale pink along the edge, in some variations with pale brown or yellow patches, sometimes fading to lilac-gray, and even greenish with small lilac spots.

The plates are frequent or rather rare, thin, sometimes branching at the stalk, adhering to the stalk, milky white or pale cream, sometimes with an ash-gray tint, with the same edge.

The leg is short, strong, then soaking, almost cylindrical or fusiform, less often thinning down, smooth or wrinkled. The color of the legs is white, often with dirty brown spots, in red weather it is sometimes reddish, in wet weather it is grayish.

The pulp is strong, but often soaking, white, sometimes brownish in arid places, reddish under the skin for at least half the length of the hat, with a faint sour apple smell, it tastes fresh or slightly caustic.

Spore powder is white. Spores 6.7-9 × 5.7-9.2 microns, obovate, tuberous, with unclear scars, mostly amyloid .

Ecology

The species is widespread in deciduous and coniferous forests of Europe .

Taxonomy

The corrugated russula was first described by Yu.V. Krombholz in 1845 as Agaricus atropurpureus . In 1893, M. Britzelmayr transferred this species to the genus Syroezhka , but in 1888, under the name Russula atropurpurea , a North American species was described. The earliest available name for the corrugated russula is apparently Russula bresadolae S. Schulzer , but now inaccessible Russula atropurpurea and later Russula undulata are usually used instead.
