Biography
A native of a low-income Catholic family, he was sent to the Catholic College of Notre Dame de Grasse de Cambrai. At the Congress of Catholic Intellectuals in Lyon, two left-wing Dominican priests presented him with the church-forbidden book The Meaning of Marxism by Henri Deroche (“God Himself Brought Me to Marx,” Maurice Godelier ironically remarked). He entered the Higher Normal School, specializing in philosophy and political sciences. In his youth he was influenced by existentialism . He began his scientific career as a philosopher, spending more time reading political economists or philosophers "Aristotle, Marx, Kant and Husserl than Durkheim and Moss."
