Sonic & Knuckles is a direct sequel to the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . The development of these two games began in 1992 as one big project, but due to the technical limitations of the Mega Drive / Genesis console, the Sonic Team decided to divide it into two parts. As a result, Sonic & Knuckles has similar to the previous game level design , graphics and gameplay . The plot of the game continues the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . The main character, the hedgehog Sonic, once again finds himself on the Soaring Island in order to protect the Chief Emerald of Chaos, which will give the main villain Dr. Robotnik to restore his battle space station “The Egg of Death”. In Sonic & Knuckles, for the first time, it is possible to control one of the main game characters of the Sonic the Hedgehog series - a snake Knacks , which in this game has its own storyline.
The Sonic & Knuckles cartridge was released with a unique “lock-on” technology that allowed it to be connected to other Mega Drive / Genesis games, with the result that Sonic & Knuckles could be combined with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , bringing in these games new features. Sonic & Knuckles received high marks from critics and was commercially successful. In North America , over 1.2 million copies of Sonic & Knuckles were sold, making it one of the bestsellers on the Mega Drive / Genesis console [5] . The game was reprinted in dozens of compilations and compilations, as well as sold in digital distribution services.
Gameplay
By controlling the game character , the player passes various levels , whose structure is labyrinth-like and includes many steep slopes and dead loops with which the characters can be accelerated to high speed. The main enemies in the game are robots - badniki ( eng. Badnik ), different in appearance and weaponry. To attack, the player’s character collapses into a ball - either by attacking the enemy in a jump, or by accelerating on the spot and making a high-speed blow in the roll, called spin dash [6] . For the vitality of the character are responsible for gold rings, which are scattered in large numbers in levels. If a player does not have at least one ring, then his character dies when confronted with robots or dangerous objects - for example, spikes. Otherwise, the character loses all the collected rings and for a limited time can collect only a part of them. In addition to the rings, at the levels there are various bonuses, depicted in the form of monitors - with their help, the player can get, for example, temporary invulnerability or extra life. The monitors can contain three different types of shield for the character: fire, electric and water (protecting against physical attacks) [6] .
Sonic & Knuckles provides only a single mode , when at the very beginning the player is asked to choose one game character - Sonic the hedgehog or Naklos echidna. The features of the game for Sonic remained the same as in the previous game : in a jump, the hedgehog can use the insta-shield technique, with which it attacks the enemy without touching it. Bonuses in the form of shields modify this technique: for example, an energy shield can throw Sonic to a much greater height than with a normal jump [6] . Echidna Knackles in Sonic & Knuckles for the first time [~ 1] acts as a game character with its own distinctive abilities [7] . Instead of Sonic's enhanced attack in a jump, Knuckles has the ability to plan a flight, during which he gradually loses altitude. In flight, Knuckles is capable of attacking enemies thanks to his clever gloves. If a character hits a wall, he clings to it and can climb it up and down [8] . With a simple touch, Knuckles can smash some obstacles from stones that Sonic is either unable to remove or is able to break only with the help of a spin dash technique . On the gameplay for Naklza affects the fact that he is inferior to Sonic in speed and height of the jump, and also does not acquire special techniques when taking shields [6] .
The levels of the game are called zones , and most of them are divided into two acts . At the end of the first act, the player fights with a relatively light mini- boss robot, and the second act ends with a battle with the main boss - he is represented either by Dr. Robotnik or his minion EggRobo, who control more dangerous and resistant fighting machines. Each act is given ten game minutes: if a player does not have time to pass the act in the allotted time, his character dies [9] . At the end of the act, the score is scored by points scored, which are given for each destroyed robot and increase depending on the number of rings the character has and time spent on the passage. Due to their features, Sonic and Nackles pass game levels in their own ways, inaccessible to each other. A significant difference also lies in the duration of the game. For Sonic, the player has to go through eight or seven (depending on the scenarios) zones: “Mushroom Hill”, “Flying Battery”, “Sandopolis”, “Lava Reef”, “Hidden Palace”, “Sky Sanctuary”, “Death Egg” and “The Doomsday” [10] . With the exception of "Hidden Palace", "Sky Sanctuary" and "The Doomsday", they all consist of two acts. Naklz ends the game on the sixth zone of Sky Sanctuary, which in his case is only a long final battle with Mech Sonic . There are other differences in the passage of levels by different characters, for example, playing the role of Sonic on the level of “Hidden Palace”, the player will have to face in the battle with Knuckles, and the game for Naklza implies more difficult battles with bosses and mini-bosses.
Bonus Levels
Special stage
Having 20 or more rings at the mark on the control point , the player gets the opportunity to get to the bonus level (“Bonus Stage”), where he can earn additional rings and lives. Sonic & Knuckles has two types of bonus levels [11] . One of them, "Rotating Maze", is a small space, similar to the special stages in the Sonic 1 . The level constantly rotates around its axis and is bounded by walls of blocks, among which there are balls with the inscription “Goal” - when hit on them, the player leaves the level. In the center of the level is a slot machine : once in it, a character either gets a certain number of rings (from two to a large jackpot ), or loses exactly 100 rings. There are also rings around the slot machine: collecting them, the player can earn a “ continuation ” [9] . Another bonus level, “Glowing Spheres”, throws the player into a kind of long vertical pinball machine. Using flipers located in it, smashing blocks and throwing energy balls, the player's character moves upwards, collecting rings and luminous spheres from which balls with various bonuses fly out. Below the character is pursued by a horizontal rotating spiral, when hit into which he leaves the level. If the player gets to the very top of the pinball machine, the level ends.
In Sonic & Knuckles there are seven new special stages (“Special Stage”) - special levels designed to collect Chaos Emeralds. The concept of special stages remained the same as in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , and you can get into them through teleportation rings hidden in various places of the game zones [11] . The “Special Stage” levels are made in three-dimensional graphics and represent a closed spherical surface dotted with blue and red spheres [8] . To pass the "Special Stage" and get one of the seven Chaos Emeralds, the player must collect all the blue spheres, without stepping on the red ones - otherwise, the player leaves the level immediately. In Sonic & Knuckles there are also spheres of yellow color, which catapult characters over long distances, allowing them to fly over entire fields of other balls. The difficulty in passing the “Special Stage” is that each assembled blue sphere is replaced by a red one; in addition, the player’s character travels around the level without stopping, and the speed of the game becomes faster and faster over time. In addition, at the levels there are gold rings, the collection of which gives the player extra points and the opportunity to get a " continuation ". Rings may simply be scattered throughout the level, but for the most part are mined due to a special bypass of the fields from the blue spheres (in the illustration) [11] .
The goal of the “Special Stage” levels is to collect all seven Chaos Emeralds. Having taken possession of them, Sonic and Naklz have the opportunity to acquire a super-form , thanks to which they become invulnerable to any damage, attack enemies with a simple touch and at the same time run faster and jump higher. Visually, the Super Sonic turns golden, and the Super Knacks begin to flicker white in a characteristic way. For Sonic, collecting all the Chaos Emeralds also opens up an additional eighth level, “The Doomsday,” where the hedgehog in super form, flying through an asteroid field, leads the pursuit of Dr. Robotnik's final robot. Sonic and Nakles’s super-form stay is limited by the number of rings he has, which decreases every second.
Story
In the previous game, the protagonist hedgehog Sonic again defeated the villain Dr. Robotnik and prevented the launch of his battle space station, “The Egg of Death” ( eng. Death Egg ). The blast wave threw Sonic back to Soaring Island, and the station itself, surviving, landed in the crater of a huge volcano. The main character, being in a deep forest, sees coming out of the aisle in the thickets of the island keeper Echidna Knuckles . In the aisle, Sonic discovered a large shining Super Ring, which briefly brought him to the huge hall where the Main Emerald of Chaos rested ( English Master Emerald ) [~ 2] . Sonic understands that he must protect the Chief Emerald from Dr. Robotnik, because in the hands of the villain this magical relic will become a source of inexhaustible fuel for the "Egg of Death." However, on the way to the stone, Sonic will face Naklz, who still considers the hedgehog to be his enemy, who has encroached on the Chaos Emeralds [12] [13] . Depending on the choice of the game character, the player gets two different plot lines [3] [7] .
Sonic leads the way through the uncharted territories of the Soaring Island, in which Dr. Robotnik has deployed his combat vehicles. The trip leads Sonic to the caves under the volcano, in the crater of which there is the “Egg of Death” station [14] . Through these caves, Sonic gets to the Secret Palace with the Head Emerald, but there he again encounters the Knuckles and a fight is tied between the heroes. Meanwhile, Dr. Robotnik penetrates the Secret Palace and abducts the Chief Emerald [15] . Realizing that Sonic is on his side, Naklz helps him get to the portal, moving them to the ancient ruins floating in the clouds, from where they watch Death Egg rising into the sky. Sonic alone overcomes the ancient ruins, battling with egg-robo -minion robots and a robotic copy of himself - Mecha Sonic . Having reached the summit of the ruins, the main character manages to jump into the "Egg of Death" flying into orbit [10] [16] . He brings the station to destruction and enters the final battle with a huge robot Dr. Robotnik, using the power of the Chief Emerald. After the destruction of the robot and the "Eggs of Death", Sonic together with the Chief Emerald falls into the ocean, but it is saved by the fox Teylz on his Tornado plane [17] . If a player has collected all the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic & Knuckles , he gets two additional endings: the characters take the Main Emerald back to Soaring Island and he rises to heaven, and in the scene after the credits, it is shown how one of the heap of defeated Egg-Robo robots comes to life [18] .
The plot line of the echidna Naklza develops after the story of Sonic [1] , when Naklz, relaxing in the company of animals in the mushroom forest, is attacked by EggRobo. Debt Naklza as the keeper of the Soaring Island is to resist to all strangers, and he immediately starts chasing this robot [13] [19] . Knuckles travels to the same places on the island as Sonic, destroying Dr. Robotnik’s combat vehicles and occasionally battling Egg-Robo. The chase ends at the site of transcendental ruins, where Egg-Robo grabs Nakles as a prisoner, making it an easy target for another robot, Sonic Mecha. However, Knuckles has time to free himself and Mekha Sonic by mistake destroys Egg-Robo himself. Between the snide and metal hedgehog, a battle is started, during which the Sonic Fur uses the energy of the nearby Main Emerald of Chaos and takes on a super form. When Knuckles defeats the robot, the ruins in the clouds begin to collapse, but Sonic comes to the aid of the echidnius, controlling the Tailo Tails aircraft. Together they take the Head Emerald back to Soaring Island. If a player did not collect all seven Chaos Emeralds, then the island descends from heaven to the surface of the water [20] .
Lock-On Technology
The “Lock-On” technology was specifically designed for Sonic & Knuckles by the head of STI, Roger Hector, and represents the ability to connect two cartridges into one unit within a single set-top box. The use of "Lock-On" allows you to get a combined version of the two games [3] .
Only a licensed Sonic & Knuckles cartridge was released with support for this technology. At the same time, this affected the previous game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 : since the third part together with Sonic & Knuckles were originally developed as one unit, and, as a result, the games have the same game style, similar character sprites are used and there is much in common in the gameplay. The Lock-On technology allows you to combine Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles , giving you the opportunity to play one large full-fledged game, which was planned earlier. Its result also gives the combination of Sonic & Knuckles with the games Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and the collection Sonic Compilation .
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (abbr. Sonic 3 & Knuckles ) is a great game that combines Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles [21] . It includes all 14 levels from both games that the player passes through as well as all three variations of the “Bonus Stage” level. To complete the game are available to choose from all three main characters - Sonic , Tales and Nackles . Thus, it is possible to play at the levels of Sonic 3 for Nuckles, and for Tails - to pass the levels of Sonic & Knuckles (both alone and in a team with Sonic). All levels are initially designed so that, because of their abilities, the characters pass them in different ways. However, from Sonic 3, the game took over the system of saving and the mode of competition .
Combining Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles makes a significant innovation in the gameplay: Super Emeralds ( English Super Emeralds ). Starting from six Sonic 3 levels, the player can initially collect seven ordinary Chaos Emeralds - during the “Special Stage” stages, corresponding to the third part. If he collected them all, then starting from the level of “Mushroom Hill” (the first level of Sonic & Knuckles ), his character gets access to the “Hidden Palace” zone, where he gives the collected stones to the Main Chaos Emerald. The game character loses its super-form, but by the end of the game it gets the opportunity to collect seven Super Emeralds. With their help, the character can take a hyper-form , which gives even greater speed and height of the jump than the super-form, as well as new abilities: Hyper Sonic rushes through the game screen with an enhanced attack in the jump, destroying all visible enemies, and same result when clinging to a wall. The character Teylzu in Sonic 3 & Knuckles when collecting all fourteen Emeralds becomes available super-form, which he could not have in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . As well as the hyper-form in Sonic and Nuckles, Tails's super-form gives him a new feature: around him fly four golden birds ( Super Flick ), which themselves destroy the enemies approaching the character [22] .
Sonic 2 & Knuckles
Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 2 (abbr. Sonic 2 & Knuckles ) is a game that is obtained by connecting the Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cartridges [23] . The game allows you to fully pass Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Naklza as a game character. The gameplay remains almost the same, with the exception of small changes: some places appear on the game levels that only Knacks can get into - thanks to their ability to climb walls [3] ; In addition, for Knuckles, the player can more often attend the “Special Stage” levels, since after leaving the character the character keeps the collected rings with him, unlike the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 . The ability to play for Sonic and Tails, as well as additional options in the combined version of the game, are missing [1] .
Blue Sphere
When combining Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 1 or Sonic Compilation, the player sees a black screen with the image of the four main characters of the 16-bit series about Sonic - Sonic, Tails, Nakles and Dr. Robotnik himself. On the screen are the words "No Way?" No Way! ”, Which allegedly speak of unsuccessful combination of cartridges. Simultaneously pressing the A + B + C keys on the gamepad opens a mini-game called Blue Sphere . This game is a collection of “Special Stage” levels, repeating the design and gameplay of similar special stages in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles associated with the collection of blue spheres. Each of these levels in the Blue Sphere is assigned a 12-digit code - that is, the player is offered to go through 134 217 728 special stages, almost each of which is unique (some stages after the number 128 016 000 are repeated) [1] [2] [7] . On the title screen of the Blue Sphere there is a choice of a game character - Sonic and Nackles - which does not affect the gameplay in any way. Each of the levels refers to one of the twelve degrees of difficulty, when at a more complex level it is required to collect a greater number of blue spheres [1] .
Development and release of the game
Initially, Sonic & Knuckles and its predecessor Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were planned as one big game, so their development began simultaneously, after the release of the second part in 1992 [24] . The development was carried out in the US branch of the Sonic Team - Sega Technical Institute , and its leaders were the creators of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Yuji Naka and Hirokazu Yasuhara . The development team was supported by the head of STI, Roger Hector [25] . About fourteen levels were created for the game, but according to test results , due to high production costs and insufficient Mega Drive / Genesis console power, the developers decided to divide the project into two parts [24] . Six initial levels were included in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , and the remaining eight were prepared for Sonic & Knuckles [10] [26] . Unlike the Sonic 3 , the continuation system was not used, but the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge had its own unique technical innovation - the Lock-On system . This technology allowed Sonic & Knuckles to connect with cartridges of other parts of the series and get a combined version of two games [3] [21] [24] . In the case of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, users received a combined game with the levels of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles , as was originally intended. In addition, , Famitsu and magazines mentioned the development of a full version of the game called Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Limited Edition (or Sonic 3+ ), but the release of this project did not take place for reasons of limited cartridge memory , high production costs and limited development time [27] [28] [29] .
Sonic & Knuckles was first released for the Mega Drive / Genesis console on October 18, 1994 — in the United States , Britain, and Japan [30] [31] [32] . The World's Most Hardcore Gamer ), Sonic 3 & Knuckles [4] .
- Sonic & Knuckles Collection для Windows (1997) [34] ;
- Sonic Jam для Sega Saturn и Game.com (1997) [35] [36] ;

Sonic the Hedgehog 10th Anniversary (2001) [44] , History of the 1ST Stage Original Soundtrack White Edition (2011) [45] , History of Sonic Music 20th Anniversary Edition (2011) и Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary Selection (2016) [46] [47] .

Sonic & Knuckles [67] .
Impact
Сюжет Sonic & Knuckles был адаптирован в комиксах Sonic the Hedgehog от Archie Comics («Specials: Sonic & Knuckles») и № 33—53 комиксов Sonic the Comic от [73] [74] .
