Legal Disputes of Developers
Between the companies Interplay and Bethesda Softworks there are disagreements about the ownership of the rights to the online role-playing game based on the Fallout universe. Bethesda company challenged the license transferred to Interplay, but lost the case and the game development was resumed.
After another trial, Bethesda Softworks and Interplay put an end to the litigation, more than two years ascertaining who owns the rights to create a Fallout MMO.
January 9, 2012 in Rockville (Maryland) signed a settlement agreement, from which it is immediately clear who won. The license obtained by Interplay from Bethesda in the spring of 2007 is invalidated. All rights to the development of MMO returned to Bethesda. True, it is not free - the company ZeniMax Media, which owns Bethesda Softworks, will pay Interplay $ 2 million compensation.
Now Interplay has only one thread that links it to Fallout - the distribution rights for Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics games. However, it was already cut off - under the terms of the amicable agreement, the license expired on December 31, 2013.
In MMORPG Project V13, however, there is a chance for survival. Interplay has the right to continue development, removing from the game any mention of Fallout and related materials. This is confirmed by information from the site Interplay, but the development of the game was stopped, and the project was closed.
